In the past I was such a player in another online game, where I spoke to a game developer, a programmer, and an artistic designer on a regular basis. Not with managers or other buffer people in between. The minutes of those meetings were published in the forum, so that all players were informed. Very different with the way things are done here. My guess is that developers sticking to their own vision (without even explaining their vision) is part of the problem why players are leaving in ever greater numbers.
What GOOD GAME STUDIOS VISION looks like :
Am still playing 8 years on ! - hi lvl 800 on new yrs eve (2017/18) !
Leading the Targaryens - PS interested in joining - PM any officer in Game :-)
taking a more relaxed role:-)
PS in top200 on uk 1 never botted or used a VPN - that's why it took 5 yrs to get to leg 800
And for the record, the developers and designers I mentioned were in fact the ones making the decisions (together, I guess it was a smaller team than that at GGS), otherwise indeed it wouldn't make much sense, I agree.
That it's just never going to happen in GGS, is a clear sign of the issue at hand.

The 2nd image is from the same war (I couldn't post all reports as it would take me all night) but you can see where I am coming from. The glory is great, but the losses after buying all those troops must be terrible for the attacker. That is why attacking/defending should be more or less equal.
