Some tips from Those Guys for new guys:

Take advantage of the no attack period:
Too many folks want that honor early, or join a group that tells them they have to have so many glory points by X amount of time. Resist. This is a stradgy game more than anything, use your grace period to build up a solid foundation and get as many levels under your belt as you can.
Don't waste your rubies:
It's tempting to toss those rubies around and get stuff faster, buy slots, etc. Then you find out you need them when things are in a pinch and you won't have them. I actually restarted the game because I was foolish like this. Best buy when just starting is bribing the tax guy. You'll make 20% more and they won't go missing overnight.
Keep your keep pretty:
Don't skimp on the decorations, the more green you have, the less likely you are to have a revolt, and it raises productivity in all areas: More resources, faster recruitment so on.
Keep your defenders for defending:
It's tempting, because they are cheap, to stock up on lower level guys and send them out for everything. Swords and Maces are a good mix to send raiding because one has the power and the other can carry more loot. If you send out just one or the other you have lower loot.
Hide your hungry army in a food outpost:
When you get your first outpost build and build up a barracks there as well as farms. When you get quests like the traveling knights put them in the outpost and make sure they are well fed so they won't make your normal guys desert when the food runs out.
I hope these tips help. Good journeys!

Tip: Check your map too see if there are pros in the area, if there are pros build up your deffences about 60% of the time because once you get out of beginners protection you might be constantly attacked by trolls. If there all about the same level or a bunch of level 1's - 5's you dont have to worry as much.
This was why I had to make a new account. ._.
Finally keep some extra troops in you other outposts just in case you need to rebuild your army.
Hitting level 1 Robber Barons that are 4 hours away will cost gold, but mean your attackers are immune to being killed while you are not around to watch over them.

You should spend rubies AT ALL, before LV 30, seriously. Bribing the tax collector is stupid, the 20% bonus is useless, you might as well build more dwellings, as gold isn't really important at lower lvs, your units are so cheap.
If you are scared that your coins dissapear overnight, set your tax collectors on 6hr tax collect, you have 9 hours to pick it up.
DO NOT USE RUBIES LIKE A IDIOT.
At that level I think I was starting to stop bribing the tax collector, and starting to save up for a bakery. I tried some other things - construction slots (almost useless), recruitment (good but not good enough for the rubies spent) and tool slots (worthless), overseers (rubbish) and mystery boxes (fairly good). Almost all of those were terrible, so I decided to save up for a bakery.
When I bought the bakery, I got it at one of those quite rare -50% cost on every ruby item deals. It only costed 625, and I can say that the bakery would have been worth the full 1250. It decreases your food consumption, it doesn't increase your production, and that is a lot better. I have had cases where my consumption is over 1500, and my bakery meant I saved 150 food per hour.

No. A bakery. IMO, watchtowers are rubbish and a stable level 2 isn't worth it until you have level 4 bakeries in every castle and outpost.
By the way, "ruby" is the singular of "rubies". "Rubbie" and "rubbies" are not words.

Save your rubies for when there is a 50% discount. If you log-on every day for a while, you get a 50% of discount at some point. Otherwise you can wait to get a 50% discount that arrives by chance (looks like a chest with puppets in it). Another use of rubies is instantly repairing your castle in case of attack. However if you know you are going to be attacked again (because you are in a war) don't use it for this.
Here is another tip: If you can get one of each resource outpost (preferably those that produce 8 resources),try to keep them close to each other. Particularly the food close to your main castle while the stone and wood should be close to each other. If your in world 2 you can see mine.
Get bakries in all outposts and mains then you go for stables or watchtower or moat but first is bakries
and dont waste rubies on tools there not that worth it if your not a ruby buyer
Been playing since 2012.

On the contrary, you can fit a lot more defenders in a food outpost, so it's very hard to take over. Since there's more troops in a food outpost, it means that the ruby buildings (especially the bakery) are used more.
That's just my opinion though - I'm sure you've done great with putting ruby buildings in your main castle.
