    ~Death and All its Friends ~

    ~The Beginning~

    For many long years the kingdom of Mirilde was peaceful and prosperous. They enjoyed many riches of gold and ruby. If one were to glimpse at the kingdom, they would think to themselves, Now that is a kingdom to be reckoned with. It was a large kingdom, privileged and blessed with long periods of growth and victory. The capital castle was large, colorful, and consisted of mostly spires, battlements and walls. The surrounding kingdom was filled with large buildings and successful businesses. Trade was at an all time high, the population numbered in the thousands, and there were few that were poor or helpless. Unfortunately not all were pleased, and believed that Prince Merek, son of king Hadrian could do a far better job, and as all things must end at one time or other, the mighty King Hadrian of Arkaley, was assassinated, no one ever found the assassin, regardless of which, it was a tragic time for the kingdom. After mourning the loss of his father, Prince Merek ascended to become King of Mirilde. His first act as King was to secede from the Alliance they had forged between themselves, and many other mighty kingdoms of the time, claiming that "The kingdom required a do over, and needed to find a new alliance, maybe even fight in the mighty Imperial War, one of the most influential wars in the history of the Great Empire between the Neph, and the Misc, it couldn't be nearly as bad as everyone said it was, could it?" However, the Alliance had been the main force of defense and support for Mirilde, and they had been major suppliers of trade and wealth for the kingdom. Merely three months afterwords, his ignorant reign was causing the kingdom to fall into collective collapse, many great empires were taking advantage of there weakness and were pillaging there castles and homes. The kingdoms armies were spread thin, and disease and starvation were setting in with winter and the Robber Baron Empire was beginning to take an interest in the now weakened kingdom of Mirilde. . .

    A renegade spy had recently brought word to King Merek that the Barbarians of the north have begun to grow in power after their defeat against the mighty great wolf Fenrir, however the great beast has since disappeared, and the Barbarians were and pillaging the local villages. In a desperate attempt to gain support, Merek has ordered that they fight back against their crusade, by setting up fortresses in the baron wasteland of Everwinter to help the villages fight back against the Barbarians, who were once their protectors under the name of the ancient Frozen Guard. Unfortunately, it has turned out to be a death trap as the mighty Lord Olafson fights them with an iron fist, destroying their progress, now the Everwinter fortress serves as nothing but a source of charcoal. . .

    In the midst of this madness, innocent families are torn apart, as Merek struggles to fight back against the criminal insurgency, and trade has fallen more than fifty percent since King Hadrian had been assassinated. Lacking in allies, and resources, the kingdom of Mirilde faces the many dangers of the world on it's own, with no hope of support in sight. . .

    Chapter 1 ~ Mirilde
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leo woke up, quickly at his small breakfast, got changed, fed the chickens, through hay to the cows, brushed the horses, and unclogged the natural irrigation system for his families wheat field. This was a normal day for Leo during the spring, it was exactly like the next one would be, and was precisely the same as the previous one, and the one before that, and even before that. After he was done with his morning chores, next he would help his sisters with the house chores, like sweeping, dusting, and cleaning the laundry. He loved the spring, it was the only time of year that the harvest wasn't demanding his complete and time consuming attention. Slightly more leisurely, the spring was Leo's favorite time of year. However, the best part of his day wasn't the sweeping, or the milking of the cows, no, the best time was his free time. After he was done with his routine, he finally got to have some time to himself, and as a boy of fourteen, free time, was what he desired most of all. Leo walked to his best friend, Jacks house, who would be done with his families baking business by now. Their two families started out as trading partners, Leo's family harvested the wheat, and Jack's family bought it and turned it into bread. However, over time, they started to become friends, above all, Jack and Leo bonded the most, and they started to spend all of their free time together, they would have adventures in the old forest, play pranks on the merchants, and all around just have fun. Unfortunately though, the military was drafting all men age fifteen up to be in the "Royal Military" were they were extracted from there homes to serve their kingdom under harsh rules, and strict punishment, and while Leo was fourteen, Jack was a year older than him and would be leaving for the training academy in a few days. No, this would not be one of their mischievous rendezvous, instead, it would be a good by party, though it wouldn't have a party attitude about it at all. . .
    ~ ~ ~
    It had been a year since Jack had been drafted, and it was the most boring year of Leo's life, also the saddest. Jack had been the only son in his family, and his father had already been drafted, and women were forbidden from doing "men's work", his family had failed, they were forced to move out as they couldn't bake enough bread any longer. And without Jacks family, Leo's family had suffered as well, all of the boys in Leo's family had already been drafted except for Leo, he dreaded what would happen to his family after he left, alas, his birthday was steadily nearing. . .
    It was 14:00 when they heard the knock on the door. They all new who it was, so none were eager to answer, but they had to, and so they stood and slowly walked to the door and let it ajar. "Is this the house of Daniel?" inquired one of the officers that stood before them.
    "Yes." they all stated glumly."
    "Judging from your tones I presume that you know why we have come before you?" asked the other.
    "Indeed." muttered Leo's mother.
    "Then summon him too us." ordered the second officer.
    "Leo!" called his mother.
    "I'm coming." shouted Leo, and he walked dismally from the barn to the two soldiers in there uniforms and blank expressions. They didn't even let him get changed out of his tattered farm cloths, barely letting him say his goodbye's they stowed him off in there carriage to a future that looked dreary and dreadful.
    Chapter 2 ~ The Royal Militia
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leo arrived at the drill camp in the Capital City of Mirilde, Arkaley, he had been hoping to see his friend Jack there, but it was too no avail, He is probably at one of the forts. thought Leo hopefully to himself before being deposited at the camp.
    "Welcome to Arkaley drill camp." said a recruiter, "You have been accommodated with all the basic necessities."
    "Thanks." mumbled Leo, though he did not feel thankful.
    "Please follow me." invited the recruiter. Leo was escorted inside and given a tour of the facility. He was shone to the dormitory, the armory, and the commons. The Dormitory was a rather large room of about fifty meters filled with row after row of bunk beds, it did not look comfortable one bit. The armory was also roughly fifty meters long but filled with rows of racks of weapons and armor. And the commons was about fifty meters long filled with rows of tables. Basically everything had the same amount of leg room, and the same boring design. There were several other rooms that he did not get to see into, the Drill Masters office was one, there was also some unlabeled ones. The entire building measured about two hundred meters of floor space, and a three hundred meter long field for training. "And this here is the Porcelain Throne room, where you'll probably spend the majority of your training." said the recruiter sarcastically. "By the way my names Jon."
    Leo, who had said nothing for the whole tour, finally spoke, "Nice to meet you Jon." he muttered. Not picking up on a single one of Leo's numerous clues that he did not want to be here, Jon escorted him back to the armory, where he got suited into his leather training armor. and was sent out to training.

    "One Hundred ninety one !" shouted the Drill Sergeant. They had been doing push ups for about sixty minutes non-stop, and if you did stop, they had to start over. "One hundred ninety two!" ordered the Drill Sergeant This is ridiculous,thought Leo. "One hundred ninety three!" yelled the Drill Sergeant. I'd like to see him do this. thought Leo resentfully. "One hundred ninety four!" Leo's arms started to wobble,No jelly arms, no jelly arms! screamed Leo to himself
    "One hundred ninety five!" shouted the Drill Sergeant. Finally he collapsed onto the ground, unable to continue. "YOU! Screamed the Drill Instructor, "DID I SAY YOU COULD REST??!!" "No Sir." said Leo glumly. "WHAT, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Yelled the Drill Instructor. "No Sir!" yelled Leo, but not as loudly as the Drill Instructor. "THEN GET BACK UP AND WE'RE STARTING OVER! ordered the Drill instructor. Receiving quite a few resentful looks from the other students, they restarted again, and again, and again, until finally the Drill Instructor got bored and moved on to the next torture device he had up his sleeve.

    Chapter 3 ~ Invitation
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leo went on with his training as a cadet at the Arkaley Military Academy for several years, he'd had the teenager tortured right out of him, there was no sarcastic, subtle youth any longer, but in its place stood a young man, hardened with battle training. He could barely remember his family and friends anymore, he did remember how sad he'd been when he'd found out that his older brother, Peter,  had died in the war, but that had been two years ago, he was almost too his seventeenth birthday now. Time to forget past grievances and prepare for the horrors of the future.
    Leo had never fit in very well with the other people at the academy, the other boys had never bothered him, but he had never concerned himself with them either. He hadn't ever been very social, his only friend ever had been Jack, but he hadn't seen him for four years now, and he'd never attempted to replace him. So he sat away from the rest of the group, preferring to focus on his studies rather than social problems.
    Finally his intensive studying payed off, one week before his seventeenth birthday he received a notice directly from the king that read, "For approximately three years you have trained at the Arkaley Military Academy, and for the span of those three years you have studied fiercely, pushing ahead of all the others at the Academy. So I have decided to promote you early, you will graduate the academy on your seventeenth birthday, and you will join the ranks of the Royal Armada of Mirilde. You will be compensated with basic necessities, food, water, equipment, and shelter. You are allowed to bring along three items of sentimental value.
    That last week trickled away day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute, second by second, anxiety perturbed him, he had difficulty sleeping, and his usually large appetite became minuscule. Tick, tock, tick, tock, the seconds drained by, the grandfather clock in the dormitory managed to announce every, last, second, listing it off like a herald would list the law. "Tick, tock, goes the clock, till' Leo leaves the Drill camp, tick, tock, goes the clock. . ." over, and over, and over, until it turned into a chant that droned out all other thought. Until finally, his birthday arrived, and on tock number 604,800, he was summoned to the sergeants office. . .
    GGS's Definition of bullying:
    • Threatening someone/someone's family/relatives IN REAL LIFE (Usually results in a permanent ban)
    • Calling people excessively vulgar/racist/hateful words/names (Usually results in a 24 hour temp ban)
    Anything and Everything else is perfectly acceptable.
    For those of you who think capping/hitting Outposts, Monuments, Laboratories, Resource villages is bullying, go play farmville or mahjong. THIS IS A WAR GAME!!
    Chapter 4 ~ Promotion
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leo marched into the office, he wen't in thinking he had everything he would need, he was completely prepared, he would go in, and come out, just get the job done. But when he came in, he walked into the last thing he was expecting. . . a waiting room. Great he thought Mans torture device, invented for men. He took a seat, and sat, and he sat, and he sat some more, finally he couldn't stand it any longer, "How long until I see the drill maser?" Leo asked one of the guards.
    "When he is ready." answered the guard.
    "Of course." muttered Leo as he retreated back to his seat. He started to analyze the room, the blank walls, the hard wooden seats, and the stone floor. The entire room felt like a dungeon, not a waiting room.
    After waiting what felt like forever, Leo was called into the Drill Masters actual office, all of his previous confidence had been drained in the waiting room, restored by anxiety and doubt.
    The Drill Masters office was a square, with a small dome at the center, with grey cobblestone walls, a wooden floor, and a circular window behind his seat. There was an armor rack to Leo's left, and the flag of Mirilde to his right. A sort of throne like chair stood against the wall below the window, and the Drill Master sat upon it, a whip in his right hand, which he would role up, and unroll over and over.
    Leo stood at attention before the Drill Master, who's name was Ebeneezer. "I assume you know why I have called you forth." said Ebeneezer.
    "Yes Drill Master Ebeneezer." said Leo confidently, though he did not feel confident.
    "Then I shall cut straight to the point." reported Ebeneezer, "You are to be placed in the second legion of Mirilde, their you will defend your home from invasion. You will be sent to the armory immediately."
    "I have one question sir." said Leo
    "What is it?" asked Ebeneezer.
    "Do you know if my friend Jack will be serving with me?" inquired Leo.
    "I do." said Ebeneezer.
    "Is he?"
    You said you had one question, you are asking two." said Ebeneezer smugly, "Yes, you will be fighting alongside him."
    "Thank you Drill Master." said Leo, bowing, taking his leave, Leo walked out the door.

     At least I have one thing to look forward to thought Leo I will be reunited with jack! Leo had to keep reminding himself of this as he went to the armory and suited into his iron armor with gold trim, grabbing his bow and slipped his quiver over his blood red cape. Then he grabbed his red and black tunic and put it on over his breastplate, finally he grabbed his helmet and tucked it under his arm, then he picked up his case, and hiked out into the courtyard. There, a black stagecoach waited to carry him to the barracks.

    Chapter 5 ~ The Barracks
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leo lay awake in his cramped cot in the barracks. Everything seemed to be blurring together, it was happening to fast, it seemed like just last chapter he'd gotten here, but it had been two days. He dully remembered his tour of the building, it was three floors high, the commons and armory were on the bottom floor, with the dormitory on the second and the deck on the top. There was also a basement used to store food, extra weapons, and explosives. Directly next door was the Encampment, where the commanders stayed, and on the other side stood the tavern, where the soldiers liked to spend there free time, which quite frankly, was very often. The barracks were somehow even more uncomfortable than the drill camp had been, oh how he longed for his cot back at home, it had been so long since he'd lain it it, he wondered how his family was doing and when he would get to see them again, he hadn't been able to visit them since his departure three years before, he hadn't even been released to go to his brothers funeral. This thought was his downfall, his entire stature collapsed and he teared up, finally he stopped holding it in and just let it go, he let his tears flow forth, pouring all his regrets, longings, fears, and frustrations into them after what felt like eternity, he finally cried himself asleep.
    He awoke the next morning to the drummer boy banging his way through the corridor, doing his morning rounds of waking all the soldiers up. They then got ready and headed down for breakfast, which consisted of stale bread, and reheated peas. Then they wen't through morning exercises until noon, where they went on patrol, then when they returned it was time for dinner which was salted pork and pickled beats, then to sleep, and repeat. This continued for a week, everyday they ate the same food, and paroled the same route, if it weren't for the sergeants, he'd have died of boredom.
    Then at the end of the week, the routine changed, while his battalion was training, an alarm horn sounded, fallowed by a war horn, the horn of the Robber Baron King. The sergeants all ordered them inside to suit up, within five minutes they returned fully suited and ready for battle, the war horns were not far off now, and they were being assigned there positions on the battlements, He and the rest of his battalion, named, Division Imperials, would be working with Division Alpha, since all the battalions were separated for every activity, none of them knew whom the other battalion consisted of, or what they were good at. The war horns were almost upon them, Leo's battalion formed rank on the battlements, ranged fighting from the wall, and melee prepared to charge through the gates when ordered. The horns would be there any minute now, then Leo noticed a familiar face in the ranks of soldiers, within Division Alpha, towards the front, stood Jack. Yes! thought Leo Finally something beneficial has occurred! Leo could hardly keep from breaking ranks to greet Jack, but it would have to wait, for the war horns were upon them. . .
    Chapter 6 ~ The Robber Baron King
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The soldiers of the Robber Baron King halted, they stood in four orderly legions, each of about a hundred men. The two legions in the front stood at attention, swords drawn, sitting bolt upright atop there horses. Towards the back, two more legions stood the crossbowmen, bolts notched and ready to fire. Behind the ranged legions rolled catapults, in front of the melee stood tall siege towers, scaling ladders, and mantles. From the back stood the King himself, the bloody coward wouldn't even fight with his own men. It was obvious to Leo that this was a show of force on part of the King, designed to daunt them, and it worked, there were only two hundred or so defenders of Arkaley, and that was with all the cadets and squires among them, there were only about seventy-five fully trained soldiers defending them. The King's main commander blew on his horn three times, signaling the charge, they marched, and a volley of flaming bolts rained on them, felling many soldiers. Then they launched the catapults, setting the ammunition ablaze, let it fly, crashing into the wall, causing it to tremble, the other catapults were launched, and the wall shook violently, and in one place, was destroyed.

    The signal was given for the defenders to fire back, using flaming arrows and hurling rocks, the resistance seemed futile, Leo notched another arrow onto his bow, and let it fly straight through the heart of an advancing soldier at the base of the battlement, the swordsman gurgled up blood and collapsed onto the ground, dead. The Robbers reached the wall, and using scaling ladders and siege towers, scaled the wall to take the castle of Arkaley. Leo's squadron Fired arrow after arrow at them, but it seemed hopeless, the enemy troops climbed up the ladders, swords and shields at the ready, the siege towers advanced and soon the massive army of attackers overwhelmed the defenders of Arkaley. They were forced to retreat to the gate, while narrowly dodging and blocking arrows and swords that were shot and thrusted at them from seemingly every direction in overwhelming amounts when they reached the base of the wall they began to shoot through the bars of the gate and back up at the troops that had taken the wall, an arrow coming from the enemy whizzed past Leo and struck one of his comrades, knocking him to the ground, where blood gushed out of his chest. Leo let loose arrow after arrow, and every time he killed an enemy, two more replaced them, he quickly ran out of arrows, and he resulted to his short sword which he kept at his waist, the robbers began to use a battering ram against the gate, quickly busting through and doing melee or hand to hand combat with the defenders, Leo hacked, slashed, and jabbed at anything that moved, possibly even his own allies, but there was no time to think about that, his own life depended on it, Leo parried a thrust at his stomach, arching it to the side and countered with a slash, lopping off the Barons head, blood exploded across the walls of the gate, transitioning into a stab, Leo felled another soldier with a thrust through his gut, then Leo rammed someone with his shield which he'd kept on his back until now, and then beheaded a swordsman, he spun and hacked a soldier in half. Leo pushed his way through the gate, mutilating anyone who dared appose him. He turned and spotted Jack, fighting off a hoard of soldiers, Leo pushed his way through the swarming mass of bodies to Jacks side, and defended his back, an arrow flew into Leo's shield, quickly followed by an ax, Leo thrusted his sword into his assailant, leaking blood everywhere, he turned in time to defend himself from a sword aimed to behead him, while he was blocking that, an arrow hit Leo squarely between the shoulder blades. He gasped, he could feel warm blood soaking his tunic, he sank to his knees using his shield to protect himself. Jack turned, and seeing Leo was vulnerable, took up defense of Leo's back, more arrows whizzed past, several of which hit Jack's shield, but Jack held fast, stubbornly standing his ground against the brutal onslaught.
    "C'mon you bloody cowards!" shouted Jack, "Fight me like men!"
    Leo regained his footing and stood at Jack's side, blood spewing down his back, but otherwise, unhindered. More defenders finally came to there aid, and together Leo and Jack led the charge against the enemy, they pressed them back, hacking, slashing, thrusting, shooting, mutilating, and beheading. Two horsemen rode past, javelins in hand, impaling the enemy troops like shish kebabs. They pushed there way through the ranks of the enemy, most of which were ranged soldiers who were ate a major disposition in melee combat. Finally they reached the catapults, which they burned. The infernos rose into the air, billowing smoke and scorching the dead. The defenders of Arkaley separated the remaining enemies into groups of twenty to thirty in order to cripple there stamina as ordered by the Castellan Commander. The enemy commander gathered a large force of seventy troops together to combat the sudden turn of tide. Leo and the other soldiers surrounded the enemies squadron, which consisted of fifty melee, and twenty crossbowmen. Leo's group was mostly untrained cadets, himself, Jack, and a few remaining experienced warriors. The enemy had crossbows primed, ready to fire when ordered, and swords drawn, anxious to fight. If I could kill the commander right now. . . thought Leo, then he realized how he could reach him. Leo surveyed the battlefield, checking to make sure that everything was right for his stunt to take place, the Robber Baron King had fled in cowardice as soon as the tide had begun to turn, many of the remaining groups of soldiers had been defeated and reinforcements were approaching. We don't need reinforcements, we can take care of this ourselves. Thought Leo smugly. Then he turned and speaking low and clear, said, "Your king has abandoned you, your army has been conquered, and you are at our mercy, this is your last chance to surrender."
    "Surrender!?" shouted the Commander in a harsh and strained voice, "I have no intention of doing so."
    "So be it!" shouted Leo, and raising his sword in the air, led the charge, taking the commander and his squad by surprise. Leo charged directly at the commander, while the others distracted his troops. Leo raised his sword in defiance, and slashed the horses neck, it crumbled to the ground, toppling the commander.
    "I didn't think you would actually do it." cringed the commander.
     "I'm just full of surprises aren't I." said Leo, startling himself with his own words. Then he charged the commander, sweeping his legs out from under him, the commander rolled back and drew his bow, notched his last arrow, and shot it at Leo, it impaled his thigh, and he crumpled to one knee, then the commander pulled out a knife and threw it at Leo, which he parried our of the air, then with one last burst of energy sprang up and disarmed the commander, who reacted by punching Leo in the face, which knocked his helmet off. The commander grabbed Leo's sword and elbowed Leo in the face, making him let go, he then took control of the sword, he pointed it at Leo's throat.
    "Any last words?" asked the commander.
    "No, but I do have a request." answered Leo.
    "No requests." growled the commander.
    "To bad." said Leo, and he rolled out of the way, just as the sword thrust into the ground, Leo grabbed his bow, and even though he didn't have any arrows, it was still good for something, he dodged out of the way as the commander tried to stab him again, then he trapped the blade in the bow, twisted, and disarmed the commander, he turned, slipping the bow around the commanders neck, and pulled him to the ground, where Leo planted his foot on his opponents chest, and pulling a knife out of his belt, he sliced his throat.

    Chapter 7 ~ Hospital
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leo collapsed into the dirt, blood pooling around him, the adrenaline had worn off, and the pain from the arrows was beginning to take it's tole on him. The last thing he remembered was a bunch of faces crowding around him, carrying him back to the castle on a stretcher, then the world went black.
    When he finally awoke from unconsciousness he was lying on a cot in a canvas tent, next to him stood a short table with some herbal supplements. Farther down the tent stood row after row of cots, all filled with injured or starving troops. a bandage was wrapped around Leo's chest and left thigh where the arrows had pierced. He was also covered in smaller minor cuts, bruises, and a damp cloth on his head. Leo was sore and aching from head to toe, and could barely even sit up, his throat was also scratchy and one of his eyes was swollen shut from his hand to hand combat with the enemy commander.
    Leo sat up and immediately regretted it, somehow he hurt more than he had when the wounds had been fresh. Then one of the commanders of the Imperial Army walked through the curtains. She had red hair, was clad in a green scarf and skirt, and had red gloves on. She bore the insignia of the Imperial Army on her scarf. She strolled calmly down the isle until she halted at attention in front of Leo.
    "Who are you?" asked Leo.
    "I am Natalia, Commander of the Imperial Everwinter Division, at your service." she responded with a thick Irish accent, "I bring news of great honor, but first, I am pleased to meet your acquaintance Sir Leopold." then she saluted him.
    "And I am pleased to meet yours." responded Leo politely, he tried to return the solute, but when he lifted his arm sharp spikes of pain shot through his body, he winced and put his arm back down. "You mentioned news? And Please, call me Leo," he said.
    "Yes, you are being transferred to Everwinter as soon as your wounds heal, I will be your escort there." she said bluntly.
    Leo was stunned, Everwinter was renowned for being forever locked in the deepest darkest point of winter. the burning sands at least had water beneath the surface of the sand dunes, but there was a thick sheet of ice, about a kilometer deep, that covered all sources of water, there were no oasis's, or lakes like there were in the other outer kingdoms. Not many who went to Everwinter came back alive. So this is my "reward" for defending this wretched castle with my life. thought Leo spitefully. The royal coward has no sense of loyalty. Then Leo, despite the enormous amount of pain, stood up to stare Natasha directly in the face, "And is this order issued by King Merek? he asked threateningly.
    "Yes, it is." reported Natalia stoutly, "It is regarded as an honor to be sent to Everwinter, only the toughest soldiers go there."
    Leo hadn't though of it that way, she did have a point.
    "And to be quite frank, I do believe you need to change your attitude young man." she retorted.
    "Leo was quite taken back, "Young man?" he asked, "You couldn't be two years older than I."
    "Amazing what a difference it makes." she huffed and she whirled around, making her scarf and her braids slap Leo in the face, then she stomped out the door.
    Leo sat back down on his bed, the combination of the pain from standing up, and the humiliation of losing an argument to a girl were simply to much. He laid back down and fell asleep once more.
    For two, long, mundane months Leo was confined to bed rest. He felt like he was back at the academy, waiting to be called into the Drill masters office. Had it only been a few months since then? It felt like a lifetime to Leo, it felt like another lifetime altogether for the two months of boredom he was subjected to in the military hospital.
    Chapter 8 ~ Home
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    After Leo had fully recovered from his injuries he suited up and struck out on the long tedious journey to Everwinter. He paid one last visit to his family before he would embark on his journey.

    Knock, Knock, Knock. Leo tapped on the door to his old home, he had so many childhood memories here. . .this was going to be a hard day. The door opened and in front of him stood a little girl, probably only nine years old at most. She looked up at Leo, clearly not recognizing him, "Mom, there's somebody at the door!"
    "I'll be up in a minute!" called an older woman's voice.
    Mom must be working in the canning kitchen. thought Leo.
    Then she appeared in the doorway, they both froze. "Leo?" asked his mother.
    "Yes." he answered.
    Then she burst into tears and was suddenly hugging him so hard she may as well have been crushing the life out of him. "I'm so glad your back." she whispered.
    "I know Mom, I know." Leo whispered back.

    They, Leo, his mother, and his three sisters, Lucy, Annabel, and Mallory sat in the kitchen. "How long will you be staying here?" asked his mother, she knew very well that the military didn't let perfectly healthy men out of there sights for long.
    "I will have to go this evening, they are deploying me first thing tomorrow morning." answered Leo, not wanting to reveal where he would be going.
    "Oh, I see." said his mother, "Well then we shall make our time together all the more special!"
    For the rest of the day they caught up with each other, talking about how the farming was going, Leo's last battle at this time his mother started to get teary eyed and Leo quickly changed the subject to the military academy. After they were done retelling stories they all started to work together to get the days chores done. Supper came all to soon and a feast of goose was placed upon the table along with green beans and lettuce. Of course the goose was small and the vegetables bitter, but it was still a feast among peasants. Finally evening came along and the girls were sent off to prepare desert. "So Leo-" started his mother.
    "Yes?" asked Leo, fearing the worst.
    "Exactly where are they sending you tomorrow morning? she inquired.
    Leo's fears had been recognized, "Oh, um, places." he stammered.
    "Yes but where?" she pushed.
    "Do you really want to know?" he asked.
    "Yes! And no." she hesitated, "There not sending you to the Fiery Peaks are they?"
    "What, no! Of course not, I'm not an experienced enough soldier for that." he said.
    "Well, than where are they deploying you?" inquired his mother.
    "Everwinter." answered Leo glumly, "They are sending me to Everwinter.
    His mother just sat there, mouth agape, staring in shock. Then she crumpled and began to sob.
     "I'm sorry mother, there isn't anything we can do about it."
    "I-I know." sobbed his mother, "But why can't we just live out our days without torment?"
    "Because the world isn't like that." answered Leo, "But we just have to keep our chins up and deal with it."
    "You give amazing pep-talks." said his mother sarcastically, a little bit of her old self returning to her.
    "Common mom, let's get desert." said Leo, helping her up.

    Chapter 9 ~ Departure
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Finally it was time to go, a small caravan awaited him and he loaded his few belongings onto his wagon, then they were off. There was a profound heaviness in the air as Leo, and the other few soldiers that were being sent to Everwinter departed on a long, perilous, and icy journey to the ridged wastelands of the north. The families of the soldiers stood in grave silence as they watched there loved ones depart, loved ones that had been torn from there family.
    The caravan consisted of ten wagons, nine of which were used as bed rooms for the soldiers, and the first one was a supply wagon that was steered by Natalia. the other nine soldiers were behind her, steered by the Medieval Taxi-men. As they traveled further and further away from home, a sullen, depressed mood began to seize the travelers with icy cold fingers. Nobody spoke for  the first two hours of the trip, then a few of them tried to lift the mood, but it was to no avail, then it was Natasha that finally broke the ice between the troops, it became very obvious that this was all a normal day for her.
    After one long day, and one uncomfortable night on the lengthy journey to Everwinter the air began to cool, the ground began to rise and it became rocky and treacherous, the only clear path being the road that they were traveling on. Finally, at about noon they reached the mountains, which seemed to stretch on forever, but in the Great empire, under the rule of emperor Czar that is, nothing lasts forever. The signal was given to halt, they quickly abandoned the carts and hid behind the boulders that lined the road. Over the wind lowed voices could be heard, voices of men, then around the bend came a band of five warriors, fully clad in armor and equipped with heavy artillery. The men stopped, one of them said with a large smirk "Looks like we've got some merchandise for Serry. Loot the carts."
    "Yes sir." responded the other four.
    Leo began to stand to address the soldiers, but he was quickly pulled back down by Natasha, who mouthed the words "Stay down." at him.
    He mouthed back "Why?"
    To witch she responded "They are members of Neph."
    Leo looked back over the rocks, and spotted the emblems on their tunics, the emblem of Neph. Oh. . . thought Leo, that's why.
    "Say, sir, why do ya reckon all this junk was left here?" asked one of the soldiers.
    "They probably went to fetch water or somthin' it doesn't matter now, finders keepers." responded the commander.
    "Hmm, hmm, keepers." grunted the soldier.
    "Sir, come take a look at this!" called another soldier.
    The commander ran over to Leo's wagon and extracted his bag of coins. Leo felt at his hip, where the sack would usually be, and his heart sank when he realized that it wasn't there. "Very interestin' "said the commander, dumping the contents onto the ground, "Serry will be happy with us tonight boys!" called the commander happily, "maybe she'll give all o us a raise!"
    That was it, Leo was not going to stand for this anymore, but Natasha held him back, this time tugging him to he ground and clamping his mouth shut she forced him into a choke, where he couldn't breath, move, or even struggle. the Neph warriors looted the rest of the carts and took their horses and used them to carry every single item the could back with them. Soon the soldiers were gone, not even the faintest trace of there voices could be heard in the wind. "ARE YOU AN IDJIT?!" shouted Natasha, spitting in Leo's face, "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY DOCUMENTS I WOULD HAVE TO SIGN IF YOU, OR ANY OTHER MEMBER OF THIS TEAM WERE CAPTURED UNDER MY COMMAND, LET ALONE BY NEPH!" Then she slapped Leo hard across the cheek. Stunned, Leo staggered back, and touched his cheek gingerly. Then she whirled around and stalked over to salvage anything they could find from the discarded garbage left behind by the Neph patrol.
    "Are you sure hat you are only worried about paper work?" asked Leo.
    Natasha spun around and stomped back to Leo, "Listen here, kid," she said, staring Leo down so hard that, if he could've, would have shriveled up into his armor like a turtle and stayed there for the rest of eternity, "You are nothing but a pawn in this battle for survival, you are one knight in a thousand, my duty is to my kingdom and to my life, I have no responsibility for one soldier! It is my job, to use you to protect my assigned castle from danger, not sacrifice anything for one measly trooper that can't even follow directions properly! Have I made myself clear?"
    "Yes ma'me." gulped Leo, but deep down he knew that she didn't really mean any of that. . . at least, he hoped she didn't
