Are you mental...yep

Trust me, if you're spending this much time and money doing something this nutz then you are mental.

Do something about it and take a vacation, get a job, or do something constructive with your family, this game is dead except for the monkeys keeping it alive.
Is it really fun? Or is it how you find relevance to your life?

My significant other works in the mental health career field as a practitioner, and you wouldn't believe the amount of research that is going into this topic. There is a connection between humans and spending money that we have known about for many years now, for most there is what's called "buyers remorse" where you spend money and you get that little knot in your stomach. Which is why spending money has been made considerably made easier via technology, back in the old days you carried currency, and you would be damned if you broke that 20 dollar bill over something small.
Then the checkbook came along, folks began spending significantly more with the disconnection between the actual money and the spending aspect. Only when they balanced that sucker would the buyer's remorse set in.
Years later the ATM/Debit/Credit card came along, and the spending went through the roof, with a swipe and punching in a few digits people were able to drain their finances almost instantly and in near real time. Now we are able to pay with directly linked applications for smart phones, both Apple and Android OS, no longer do we even have to slide our cards but we can air swipe them, which studies have proven nearly eradicates any buyer's remorse.
Now, with that being said, we combine it with another powerful addictive tool. A virtual environment that empowers some in real life who don't have the control they desire, the power they yearn for, and the respect that are unable to garner.
Don't get me wrong, there are a few that play the game as a side hobby just to pass the time, spend a few dollars and have a few laughs. But, I am willing to bet there are many here who are spending money they don't have to lose, going out of their way to literally throw the funds to the gaping black hole that is GGS.
I have always wondered how much "insider trading" was going on with GGE and the higher visibility players on the server maps, and it was until Clintrich spoke out recently that it solidified that theory. Any smart business model would salute that tactic, I of course have 0 proof that it is even happening, but who would blame them if GGE decided to be able to predict quarterly sales with war tempos.
Also, another question I have been asking is, since I have been told by more than 2 customer support team members, is how many players on the map are GGE owned? Players that seem to be on another level no matter how hard you try and catch them, like a hare to chase around a track in a race that will never end.
Would it be that far fetched to think that there are some accounts that will always be stronger for the mere fact that GGE knows that there will always be the hyper competitive types who will go out of their way to become better than the perfect players.
So the simple science is the beauty of it, add two addictive behaviors (spending money + gaming on an emotional level) and you have something so powerful that is will without a doubt ruin lives. How many times have you read either on the forums, in chat or through PMs that your closest friends are leaving because their financial situations have been made askew due to their behavior here?
GGS/GGE is one of the most successful drug dealers I have ever encountered, and that's saying a lot since I used to work in the counter narcotics realm once upon a life.
Just a tidbit, if you have ever found yourself buying either troops, rubies, or anything on this platform out of anger then they have their hooks deep in you, and taking a step back might benefit you on a very high level.
Said it before and I'll say it again, that episode of South Park with Freemium games is so spot on it's ridiculous.

insanity -
n. mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior. Insanity is distinguished from low intelligence or mental deficiency due to age or injury. If a complaint is made to law enforcement, to the District Attorney or to medical personnel that a person is evidencing psychotic behavior, he/she may be confined to a medical facility long enough (typically 72 hours) to be examined by psychiatrists who submit written reports to the local superior/county/district court. A hearing is then held before a judge, with the person in question entitled to legal representation, to determine if she/he should be placed in an institution or special facility. The person ordered institutionalized at the hearing may request a trial to determine sanity. Particularly since the original hearings are often routine with the psychiatric findings accepted by the judge. In criminal cases, a plea of "not guilty by reason of insanity" will require a trial on the issue of the defendant's insanity (or sanity) at the time the crime was committed. In these cases the defendant usually claims "temporary insanity" (crazy then, but okay now). The traditional test of insanity in criminal cases is whether the accused knew "the difference between right and wrong," following the "M'Naughten rule" from 19th century England. Most states require more sophisticated tests based on psychiatric and/or psychological testimony evaluated by a jury of laypersons or a judge without psychiatric training. A claim by a criminal defendant of his/her insanity at the time of trial requires a separate hearing to determine if a defendant is sufficiently sane to understand the nature of a trial and participate in his/her own defense. If found to be insane, the defendant will be ordered to a mental facility, and the trial will be held only if sanity returns. Sex offenders may be found to be sane for all purposes except the compulsive dangerous and/or antisocial behavior. They are usually sentenced to special facilities for sex offenders, supposedly with counseling available. However, there are often maximum terms related to the type of crime, so that parole and release may occur with no proof of cure of the compulsive desire to commit sex crimes
The medical definition of insanity per the DSM V is:
Non existent. Due to the fact that everything is classified as a mental disorder when a person's mental working order is not considered "normal".
To be perfectly honest, I think each and everyone of us here has to be slightly insane to be involved in this game for more than three days. Me included and becoming more self aware of that fact on a daily basis.
You're correct as the day is long, when Satan appears and describes the dopamine reception it hit the nail right on the head.
We like to think that the smart folks here are the ones with super commanders, tons of troops and amazingly producing castles, but in reality, the smartest folks are either the resource players who have never spent a dime, or the ones who never progressed passed the tutorial.
I wonder what the results will be in a few more days.
Even being a competitive resource player is crazy. I've dumped more time into the game than I'd care to tell anyone and even then I can't compete with people who spend past maybe a few days or so.
