Triangle- Leaving.

Well, I have more or less decided to leave the game. This decision has been coming for a while now, and I can't say it is because of any particular update or decision by GGS. The only thing that surprised me, was how easy it was once I stopped.
The thing is that my commentary on various updates here on the forums requires me to think deeply about different aspects of the game, and the choices presented to the players at each stage. And I have come to the gradual realization that in truth, there are very few choices left to me, and high level players in general. I know what a good attack setup looks like, and how to respond to the usual attack types. I know what buildings I need to build in my castles, and how to play the different events reasonably well despite me not being a ruby player. Diplomacy too, even though I am not particularly involved in it, has become irksome and predictable to me after these two years, with the same grievances, miscommunications and bullying family alliances. Whenever I fail, it's either because I was not online, or did not have the necessary tools, commanders or troops to perform the necessary actions. Whenever I win against another experienced opponent, it is because they where not online, or did not have the necessary tools, commanders or troops to respond to my actions. The game has become nothing more than a grind-fest, to the point that I already refer to it in speech not as "GGE" but as "the collection game".
For a long time I contented myself with considering it not so much a strategy game, but a social club, and set myself the goal of bringing some good players into my alliance to replace any rolls I might leave empty if I left. However, the unfortunate truth is that these plans have come to nothing. Throughout my time in Minden Militia, I have seen many good, intelligent, active players come forward that I thought had the potential to bring our alliance out of the middle-tier, and up to the big guys. And yet, each and every one would get burned, would get into an argument or just frustrated, and end up joining one of the families I despise.
Perhaps I am just babbling, but the point is that I am frustrated, no longer as social as I used to be, and see nothing but endless tower grinding in my future. To top it all off, with the beginning of the school year, I now have even less time to devote to fixing these problems. I taught myself to spend the spare 30 seconds while waiting for a video to load or teacher to walk in to quickly check on my castles, and have found that this has the remarkable effect of making days and weeks fly by without one really noticing. And now, when I look back, I realize the costs in time, sleep and mental acuity that my pointless achievements in GGE have taken from me.
Really, I've just had enough. I will continue to be active on the forums, and I will check in from time to time with my castle. But I expect that both these activities will end in the coming months.

Regards,

-triangle (Simon)

PS And yes, I know this is not strictly speaking supposed to be for the Questions about the Game section, but it gives my final opinion on GGE, so I think that would qualify it.

My Thoughts:
Two years of Playing GGE: Independent Alliance and None Ruby Players
How GGS handles our Feedback

Why I decided to Leave
Thoughts on the Legendary Update

Achieved title of "the terrible", on the 8th of August 2014, without buying rubies, and while playing in an independent alliance.

Quite a good way to go out of the game, eventually everyone will go out and I too will one day although you make it sound so sad, cheer up mate, maybe its a good thing to leave but do it with a bang and stop looking at the bad times and look at all the new people you've met, wars fought and the overall community spirit 8)

Would be sorry to see you go and your insight would be missed. We all get a bit fed up from time to time but nothing worth doing is straightforward or simply achieved hope you give it time and reconsider.

I saw someone calling it "Castleville". GGS merged our ingrained desire to collect things into this "pay-to-win-click-fest" (another expression someone else came up before me).

I will miss your interesting posts; I probably envy your ability to call it quits easily. I keep telling myself that I still have a lot of spare-time to burn, which is correct in principle, but there is lost opportunity cost that should be considered. What I managed lately was to skip all long events (Thorn King, etc.), with the Nomads having become a medium long event I can claim really sticking to this plan for now.

I learned a lot here, especially how addictive an online game can become.

Bye Triangle, sad to hear you have quit.

As for how fast time can fly by when playing the game, It only feels like yesterday that I heard about the game from my little brother back in early 2012..and well here I am over 2 years later. I thought I wouldnt be playing GGE for more then 5 minutes...

The cost to keep up with the game in-depth can very much so be draining of time and energy.

We all have our addictions. Some call them demons. I am fond of saying "control your demons lest they control you". This becomes more obvious when dealing with something we like to do, but are so frustrated in doing it, like GGE. We play the game, we get hooked, and we spend the rest of our time trying to "unhook" ourselves from it. I wish you well, Triangle. Congrats on breaking free of your demons grip.

It irks me too, the grindiness, and the sheer amount of "babysitting" it needs.

Possibly the latter could be improved with smartphone apps that push notifications, and maybe let you do some minimal management things.

At the moment, the way it tends to encourage one to stay logged in, so you can tab to it every so often to check up, makes it nothing but a resource hog on gge's servers and an unnecessary time vampire to the players, I'm not seeing the profit in that... I'm sure people don't really spend that many rubies apart from when they intentionally plan to play for a while. Add to that, that it's impossible to take a short break from even without a hugely high likelihood of negative consequences, setting you back a week of play time or longer for just a day or two respite, then it seems practically designed to promote rage-quit and user churn.

SO...I get conned out of rubies and support refuse to give them back. But when a ruby player does the same as me they get them back? This to me is point blank evidence that support and GGE don't give a fuck about us non ruby buyers...

Good Luck in real life and I completely agree with what your saying about time flying by this game gets addicting sometimes but its starting to be less and less sticky because of GGS being greedy and ruining the fun for non heavy buyers and non buyers
