One thing you can do is, if there is a spot already filled that you have enough collectibles for, when you scroll your mouse over the collection details it will tell you who donated them. You could ask that person to remover her collectibles so you can complete the task.

Personally, I find symmetry and patterns to be more esthetic. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So for me why shouldn't I get a bonus for having less diversity??? Therefore I don't think something like this would work.
