It really, really helps to read the forum and the Official Announcements carefully every time!
Don't worry though; you will be able to train your foal much quicker/better than the parents! ^^
The horse breeding information annoncemnet Jiesta mentioned is here:

I'm quit sure that you get a newborn horse with the name Goldy, and at least one of the 2 horses you breed have the name Goldy?
The newborn horse you get, are cheaper to train than the horses you have breed.
- for more information about horse breeding, check the link about that in my signature.
But if you feel it's not for you then you just focus on the parts of the game you like and understand

Always try to breed horses with a similar level, and if that's the best, make sure you have a mate at the same level for him/her.
You can find GSS's breeding info here: http://en.board.goodgamestudios.com/bigfarm/showthread.php?127726-Update-December-11th-Horse-breeding-and-other-surprises
Some people are saying that the new horses have the training of the old one averaged between them. No they don't! Both mine were 0-0-0 and I had to start all over again. I've since managed to get just one of them up to the level of the lost one but I am understandably scared to try breeding for the first time.
I feel no pity for people who say the game is stupid, because they didn't properly read the instructions, but your situation is just KAK!
Edit, realised I used a dutch word my coop is used to by now
Yes they do.
If you breed 2 level 10 horses, you loose booth, and get a new foal level 10 which is cheaper to train from 10 and up, than it would have been to train one of your old level 10 horses.
If you breed a level 10 horse with a level 20 horse, you loose both, and get a new level 15 foal (which is cheap to train in the beginning)
The more times you train the same horse, the more expensive it be to raise it to next level.
That why it wise to breed a horse when you feel you get to little level-raising for you horseshoe compared how much level-up a new horse could get for the same amount of horseshoes.
Since I not saw how you do, I can not tell what happen there.
But my advise will be: try train up both your 2 horses to level 12, and then breed them. Then you will loose them both, but get a new level 12 foal which is cheap to train up to level 20.
I bred my first pair of horses and now one of my horses has disappeared. Anyone know why?
It's perfectly normal.
When you breed two of your horses the will disappear and instead you get a new horse that is cheaper to train and, depending on its breeding value, it might also have some nice breeding effects.

Why?
Because it would get very expensive, very fast. As the horse increases it's breeding value through training each training level will cost more horse shoes.
It's better to follow the advice given many times in this thread and in this thread:
Train two horses to (near) equal breeding value, then breed them. The new foal will get a breeding value between it's parents and it will require less horse shoes to train. Plus you get breeding effects that give bonus stats.
And lastly, "they" did tell us clearly. Or haven't you read the official announcement?
