You plays your quarter... you takes your chances. Knowing there is more to come, in GGS world, means that if you pick a strategy before all the information is in, you run the risk of having selected the wrong strategy. I guess I did. I'm surprised non-trainers were able to get near 5/5/5 upgrades, but if they did, more power to them.

I think there is a fixed minimum in the calculation of the odds, so there is always a small change to win.
A lvl 10 horse and a lvl 5 horse would be facing the same minimum odds, equal change of winning.

Having returned to Big Farm after some years away (and starting 'from scratch' again), I must say that I find several of the newer developments somewhat underwhelming. I don't see much point in the horse farm, as it gives very little (or no) benefit to the main farm. I don't enjoy the Island for the same reason. I fail to grasp what entertainment value can be derived from buying Island dollars, to grow island produce, to sell for shells, to use to buy seeds, to grow exotic fruit, to give to the ship, to get horseshoes, to train an inanimate horse, in order to (rarely) win an unviewable contest, in order to win golden horseshoes, to upgrade the stable/training facilities, to train the inanimate horse some more, in order to (rarely) win some more unviewable contests

I don't, for the life of me, see why I'm doing this! For a start, the whole Island aspect seems completely irrelevant: why can't we just grow exotic fruit in the greenhouse, in the same way we just grow crops in the fields, without the shells nonsense?

What is the 'end game' for the horse farm? Why am I doing it? Why should I do it? To what end?

The more the game moves away from the 3 main farms, the less and less enjoyable/relevent it seems to become. And, sadly, I'm more and more of the opinion that GGS are simply making the game up 'on the hoof' (pardon the pun) and there's no real method.

    To quote from Apocalypse Now:

Colonel Kurtz: Are my methods unsound? Captain Willard: I don't see any method at all, sir.

Okay... Ha-ha. So my thread/post moved here and now I can't find it! ?(
but, anyway, I guess the gender doesn't matter now cause
after all that training and then breeding
my two horses have vanished!! WHAT!? WHY? X(
I've wondered what the purpose and benefits are concerning these he/she horses
--but it's only now fully sinking in that the answer is there is no answer

Although I'm starting to understand more of the whole breeding thing with the horses, what has me scratching my head is that this is the company's idea of FUN! A stuffed pony in a field, complex formulas, and terminology that confuses even experienced players. After jumping through all the hoops to reach this point, I am extremely disappointed with the horse ranch.

There is a final (as yet undisclosed) stage to the whole process, where we can use the gold horseshoes, so its still a work in progress atm, animations will be added too apparantly, but for now you can join the rest of us in our delierious state of confusion hehe 8|

Maybe, but confusion breeds more confusion. That so many feel they've 'been conned' after intially having to use so many horseshoes prior to the recent fix, is testament to the perils of launching a 'work in progress' before you've ironed out its manifest wrinkles.

Perhaps GGs should have launched the stable with a 'buyer beware' proviso e.g,
"Look we have a vague idea for a horse stable aspect, but it's still very early days, so it's best not to invest any gold into it, or money for that matter. Oh, and don't invest any time in it either.....in fact, now we come to think of it, it's really just best to give it as wide a berth as possible until we've actually worked out what the actual point of it is ourselves"

Yes. But why are there 6 boxes then in total if you loose the parents. I'äm not hoing into this until it's more real and logical. For the moment it's not logical. Real life horse breeding is a real work! There's genetics etc involved, parents results in competition, lines back in time etc etc etc... But you do NOT loose the parents (unless thhey die). There's a choice to keep them or sell them. NORMALLY you sell a better foal in order to also make money out of it and you keep good breeding parents.
you can choose. And it also seems that no matter what - your opponents horses are always better than yours.
I think it's strange and I don't understand it at all.
I have owned a horse - and I bet there's more players here that have. I had a pure arabian stallion named Red Shadow ox from the famous and very, very rare bloodline of Crabbet Stud. I also knows about genetics in breeding of animals in general as I've been a succesful breeder of pure bred guinea pigs (exported many and imported too - 6 champions. I have also bred rabbits ( for rabbit jumping with elite rabbits). And NO WAY I would have got rid of a real good breeding animal just like that. Exeptions to renewal of blood lines in order to avoid inbreeding and lack of space. But then again - they were SOLD for good money both here in Sweden and to Norway, Denmar, Finland and UK!
So this is why I don't like the fact you loose 2 horses in order to get one new... Weird!

Griffith if you train 2 second generations, the training does go faster... my second generation would have gone from 27 to 28 with max shoes. My 3rd generation goes from 26 to 33 with max shoes. True it took a while to get two horses above 20/20/20, but the effects of breeding are good. I also got 2 breeding effect which I got to chose from, and now that I bred two that had that little circle in the left hand corner, my new horse has a permanent one.

I also like the fact that it costs less to train now. But we still spent way more horshoes before to get to level 10. Not to try to start an argument but as to "you win some, you lose some" THis is not a casino or gambling site, and yes real money is involved. Enough said on my part. I just think its wrong. I guess I will just wait to do anything new until others get the shaft for jumping right in.

By saying you win some...you lose some I was talking about the competitions. You can't win them all. I never said nor did I insinuate that this is a casino or gambling site. Yes real money is involved in some cases but GGS never forced anyone to buy gold or spend gold on the island. I choose to spend real money on this game but I wouldn't spend it on an island event that disappears after 30 days or less. That's just me. You do not have to spend gold to obtain horseshoes. If one chooses to do so then that's on them. Yes we had to spend more horseshoes in the beginning to train our horses but they could only be trained up to level 10. I believe the intention was for us to learn & figure out how we should train our horses. There was no rush to get to a certain level but just learning a new feature I think. Now we can train them further with less horseshoes. They made a change for the better in my opinion & there's more to come. :)
As soon as you have settled in, there will be new additions to the horse ranch, including more horses, breeding, player versus player competitions, trophies and another new feature that will make use of any leftover competition horseshoes you may have amassed over time.

I trained my horse at the lowest training, 20 shoes, before the upgrade my horse was 6/6/6, my training grounds were 5/5/4. My opponents are at lvl 32/34/46. Tessa gives the worst odds to win, but somehow I beat here more often then the others.

I started out spending a bunch of horseshoes to train my horse & I didn't seem to be doing so well. So I decided to do the minimum training for 20 horseshoes & seemed to do a lot better in the competitions. I guess slow & steady wins the race. :)

Well, I think it's time for my to give my 5 cent's words to those people who don't like they loose their first horse in the breeding process and find it wrong they can't keep a good parent horse.

First thing it seems you forget: Bigfarm is not the real life, there is a lot of things in Bigfarm you can not compare with the real life, just as an example see the egg prices: I get 120 doller per egg! - I guess it's gold-eggs ;)

Second: If I have understand the instructions correct, in fact they try to simulate horse breeding like in the real world, but in a very simplified way where one of the thing which some off you find wrong is that both the parrent disappear when they get a child.

As I have understand the instructions (The higher class i give the exampless the better are the horse):

    A=our first horse (class 1)
B= the second horse (we buy it) (class 1)
    C= child from A+B (C= class 2)
D= new horse (buy) (class 1)
    E= child from C+D (E=class 3)
After several breeding you end up with a horse which is much better than your first horse let's say you now have a class 20 horse ...Why then still keep the first class 1 horse to make more hoses with a lower class than this best horse you now have (class 20)?

But off course, it's possible I have misunderstanding someting in the instructions, and I have not yet myself have time to breeding my horses.

    wow!
A lot of you are well along.

    I haven't bred yet.
It occurs to me though....if the foal inherits anything from the parents, then breeding at lower levels (ie:10-15) would result in a 'lesser' horse than if bred with parents at much higher levels.
In turn creating stronger next generations down the line.

    Am I wrong?

Of course you want to breed the second generations with a 20 or higher, you get extra breeding effects that way. Yes, you need 2 second generation horses with high levels for it to make a difference. You then get 2 breeding effects, helping you in challenges as well. But really, take 2 new horses and train them at each station 1 time with max shoes and breed. Repeat. Now you have 2 generation 2 horses, train them each one time in each arena at max, they will be around level 25, and breed them. There is your 3rd generation horse. It really doesn't take that much.
The "quality" will not show up permanently until you have bred 2 horses that showed the icon in the box when you created them as foals, which I had done. Now my new horse has a permanent circle in that corner with a 1 in it

I understand the quality issue, it would have been easy to make it permanent on all levels. And I am trying to figure out how to make a 4th generation horse with only 3 spots, but unless my 3rd gen levels up drastically to where I could mate it with a second gen, I don't think I can do it.

Yon, the foal will take attributes from both horses, and in the breeding box, you can click through horses and get the foals info without committing to a new horse. It lets you page through the horses before pushing the heart, or breeding button.
Basically taking two horses around level 14 and breeding them, creating a foal from that. Then that new foal will train faster and get some breeding qualities.

Griffith, that is my plan, with a few tweeks...

To get 3 breeding effects you need +35, not 30, so will shoot for that
(so far my 3rd gen trains from 25 to 32 with one max shoes, so will see what can do from 32 when current training session is complete)

I have an entire spreadsheet on my hose breeding because only the parents show up in family tree, not grandparents, ect.

They seem to get stingier as the levels get higher... I guess just another "goal" to reach
This is from the original announcement:
Foal breeding value 10 or higher: first slot is created
Foal breeding value 20 or higher: second slot is created
Foal breeding value 35 or higher: third slot is created
Foal breeding value 50 or higher: fourth slot is created
Foal breeding value 70 or higher: fifth slot is created
Foal breeding value 90 or higher: sixth slot is created

I am sure at least one of my 3rd generation breeders will have more than +35, because I need some time to create two more second gens to even be able to have another third!! That little icon did not show up permanently on my 2nd generation, just showed up in grey on it when it was a foal, and never saw it again until breeding those two, so kinda tricky. I am not sure what the logic is behind that.

I find it very irritating that you can only challenge the NPC's once in total (considering you lose, ofcourse) and not once per horse.
If Jinx loses her jumping competition, Dewey wants to try as well!

Did you upgrade the stable? Each stable upgrade will grant you 1 new stall. Then you may buy another horse.

I have a horse with breeding level 14. I performed a full maxed out training session and that number did not move. This does not seem right.

It is 1600 competition horseshoes for level 3 of the stable. Does anyone know how many for level 4?
