How are the percent of running costs calculated?

I joined Big Farm on 4-24-14 and I'm on level 34! Upgrades are getting EXPENSIVE and take FOREVER! I have about a -78 per cent on the happiness scale and I understand that. I'm trying to figure out how the percent of the running costs are calculated, so I can determine if a new decoration or replacing an old one with a new one will help. I can't find anything about this anywhere! Dos anyone know or is there a list of the breakdown somewhere? I guess when I get to -100 per cent, I won't have any running costs! I read where someone had a - 300 or -400 percent. Is that possible? Would I get paid running costs if over -100 per cent? Thank You!

GGS won't disclose their formula, but this post has a very good approximation.

It is no longer possible to achieve -100% running costs, and it was never possible to get better than that. The other end of the range approaches +500% running costs, which is Very Bad Indeed.

I've been trying to figure this running cost formula out as well. On my main farm I have 65 happiness with -49% running costs. I was at -37, added a 26 happiness point decoration and moved to -49. On the gourmet farm I have 40 happiness with -38 running costs. Flower farm is 69 happiness with -51 running costs. Just doesn't make much sense to me. I was at -65 to -78 on all my farms. Doing the upgrades required more workers which equals less happiness which means getting more decorations to try and balance yet it doesn't ever balance!

The post that montuos links to in their post has a good graphical representation of the new formula. It helps explain things a lot better. Once again the link is for this post is http://en.board.goodgamestudios.com/bigfarm/showthread.php?102283-New-Happiness-Data-%28working-out-the-formula%29

Actually, Yoho, I've started getting things to balance right for me. It took getting a bunch of medium and large reward decos from the Events and placing them on my various farms. I have 4, 2 and 4 on my main, gourmet and flower farms respectively. There's also several treehouses.

I'm not sure what's the best balance would be, since they changed the happiness formula.
But I think a happiness between 60 and 70 % maybee is best?
Higher happiness gives lower running cost, yes, but the need deco's for that takes up space where it maybe in the last end could gives a better income with a production building and accept a little higher running cost.

I keep my farms between -50 and -80% running costs for the gourmet and flower farms and between -40 and -60 for the main farm because I like having the really high profit margin. It also makes it easy to keep profits high even after a big expansion of my production capabilities.
