Newbie Forum Question - Read and Unread Posts and Threads, Following Threads

I'm new to forums. I've read all I can find and just found the icon legends, so that helps. But now I can't find some of the help screens again-as I recall they didn't answer my specific question, but I was going to check again, now that I'm becoming educated and know better what to look for! Oops! I just marked ALL messages read, but I didn't want that. What determines if a message is read or unread? How can I mark an individual thread/post read without marking all the rest of them too? Can I mark threads I want to go back to or follow somehow? an I find all he threads I have written or posted to somehow, so can check on responses? Thank You!

Posts are marked read when you load the page that displays them. So, for instance, if there's a thread that is multiple pages of posts, loading the thread will display and mark read the first x posts (the number is variable; there's a setting where you can choose from 5 to 40 posts per page), but subsequent pages are not marked read until you load them.

As far as I know, there is no way to mark individual threads read manually. I either just open all the pages, whether I read them or not (I usually do read, though, because I'm an information junkie), or try to remember that I'm not interested in that particular thread.

If you go to http://en.board.goodgamestudios.com/bigfarm/usercp.php (I keep this open as my home page in the forum, along with a couple of other pages that I watch) you will see a list of threads with new comments that you are subscribed to, either automatically by commenting in it, or manually by clicking "Thread Tools" -> "Subscribe to this Thread..." right above the first post in any thread page. Once you've read them all so none is listed there, you can look at the lefthand side and the second box down is "My Subscriptions"; click the "Subscriptions" link there and you will see every thread you're subscribed to.

You can mark a specific forum as read if you go to that forum and then use forum tools. There you can mark that forum as read. For example: if you go to forum games and click on it, there you see thread starter, replies and the last post. Right above that there stands forum tools. There you can make your choice for "Mark This Forum Read", now only that forum is marked as read.

If you want to see all the threads where you posted a message in just go to settings. On the left side there is My Subscriptions with Important and Subscriptions under it. If you want something to be in the important folder just go to the thread you want to be important and use the thread tool (you can find it the same as the forum tool) and then "Subscribe to this thread". Under the Subscription you can see all the threads you posted something in.
