Game is too expensive to play for long.

I'll bet the farms have a high abandonment rate over time. It is impossible to put a farm on a profitable basis without investing cash, thereby defeating the purpose of a "free" game.

It could looking like that, yes...
But in fact it is possible to be a succesfull farmer without buying gold.
There are some players in the game who are at a very high level, and earns all the land on all their 3 farms, without ever have spending a dime on the game.
    The magic word is "patience"
You earm a little gold every time you level up and there is also some other things which give you a little free gold.
If you use that gold in the strategic best way, you also can be a succesfull farmer without buying gold. - But it will takes long time :)
If you buy gold, you can quicker be succesfull, yes... but there is more challenge to succesfull without using gold.
Everybody can build up a powerfull farm very quickly, if they have tons of gold, but where is the challenge in that?

I will call myself a moderate gold user, but not a heavy gold user.

Actually, I manage quite fine, and I've never bought any gold. And I'm playing for 8 or 9 months now.
    Btw i'm level 65

Yup, there are quite a lot of players actually in the upper to top of the ranking that didn't ever buy gold - it just takes a bit of patience.

But, as I said before, you don't have to play Big Farm anyway near competitive, just go ahead at your own leasure and have a good time while doing so :) I can assure you you don't have to pay anything at all to make a profit ingame.

    Hi Lisa,
Took a look at your farm. The reason your having problems is that you don't have enough decorations on your farm. You have way way too many fields going on your level. You need to get rid of some of those fields and put down a bunch of decorations until your happiness indicaticator is in the green. Then you will make a profit and the game will be much more enjoyable. Make sure you don't build a house or upgrade a house unless your building or upgrading something and you need workers for what your building or upgrading. Hope this helps. Take care.

I am at level 37 on my www1 game and have never bought gold and don't intend to. I started this game for that reason. It just takes patience and budget your money. Make sure you have decos, but also don't worry about land. Just upgrade what you have to the max. Make a plan. Don't worry about the tasks on the side of the screen. They will be there when you get around to doing them. Put off buying cherry tree, till your farm can maintain a good excess of fertilizer. Upgrade and budget and save.

Lisa, how long have you been playing the game? It says your join date was what, a week ago?

I didn't buy gold (and then only some teeny bit on an insanely good deal) until I was level 75. One person in my co-op has never bought gold, and now he's level 100-something. It's indeed possible, and you just have to not get sucked into competing with golders or comparing your farm to theirs.

I'm pretty sure people in the early stages abandon their farms because they lack the appropriate patience to play a farming game.

That "join date" indicator left to a posting, do not tels when you start playing Bigfarm.

My "Join date" says 27.08.2013 and that day I posted my first posting in forum:
    http://en.board.goodgamestudios.com/bigfarm/showthread.php?78702-Searching-for-a-coorperative-(DK-)
In that post I tell that I have started playing the game the day before (26/8-2013).
I guess the "join date" only tell when you post first time i forum, but not when you start playing the game.

I've been farming for over a year, and haven't bought with real money. Not intending to do so either. I'm now at level 80. So it IS possible to play for free.

You don't get charged when you let things sit, so I just quit everything and kept planting and harvesting wildflowers until I got enough to do what needed to be done. They are free to plant and harvest and while it takes some time, it is a great way to build up your money before you take on a big project like an expansion. And I tried a dozen times to buy gold when it was 100% recently but it kept refusing to take my debit card. Now I'm glad. I've got way to much other stuff to spend money on than a virtual game.

Ok, then it seems like I'm wrong in my guess with that "join date" indicator.

Hi,each one has the option to be or not to be a gold buyer,or when even to be or not to be a gold buyer;and for that we just need to adjust our goals to that option .
    Have a great day:)

Just to clear up the start date issue here, the date that you see here on the forum is the date that your account was created for the forum - not your game date. So the day you first clicked on the forum button in your game window and came to the forums, that is what set the join date that you see under your account name. :)

    8) You can go in your profile and see when your start date is. I think it is right anyway. Mine says the same as on here, and I didn't come to the forum for a long time after I started. :p
