Hi - newbie, here... Is "buying" gold with real money the only way you can play this game?

No. Many players happily play without spending any money on the game. :)

Still it is a nice addition to add money in I guess.. but the game is good enough and not frustrating to play without

imho I can only say for the missions it should be differentiated with gold enabled and disabled. that would put fair play into practice. though I still like it when giving the old nudge to moneybags.. lol

Flamingo, basically, you need to purchase the opening of the create with gold to obtain the goods inside it. You don't actually get a crowbar. The amount of gold needed should be shown when you click on the crate.

Then you need to do what everyone else does to get their free gold - sign in regularly and level your farm up. :)

You can play without spending RL$$, and many do, I am sure.
However, if you want the advantages, you will not get them without spending money. The game is carefully crafted that way. It does not appear to be possible to complete the event tasks and get the rewards without spending RL$$.

In fact it is possible. I did it many times and others with me. You do need to be really really but I mean really active and have a well-built farm to have the best chance on finishing the event without spending gold.

I've completed all but one Event without spending gold. I am in the a good position though, where I am about all day, so I can keep popping back to the farm regularly

I often defer to you to learn new things about the game, so I won't dispute your claim, but my family gets really really but I mean really impatient with me when I attempt to spend that much RL time online. I would welcome your input on farmbuilding and co-op building. I have never been able to complete a full event's taskload because of a lack of time and unwillingness to spend THAT much RL$$ on a game.

If you cannot be that active, focus more on cows and pigs and long duration crops. I am not sure if you need all those 6 fields. I have 5 at level 77 and they are more than enough ^^ You may be able to replace one or two fields for a cowshed or a pigsty. I also think a water tower would help you more than a workshop. You can keep the workshop, but maybe you should save your gold now for a water tower (which I did not spot on your farm). That is about my recommendation for now :)
