    The happy animals

Once upon a time there was a farm called “Laden”. In the beginning the farm was just a little farm with a single chicken coop, and in this a tiny little white chicken lived – Snowbell. Snowbell was very lonely, as she was the only little chicken on the farm. So the day when the farm expanded with a pig house, little Snowbell looked forward to meet the pigs. In the pig house a little pink pig named Rosie moved in, and soon Snowbell and Rosie were best friends.

Time passed and the farm grew even bigger and a cowshed was build. Snowbell and Rosie followed the building of the cowshed with huge excitement, and suddenly one day it was completed, and in moved a group of cows to produce milk for the farm. At first Snowbell and Rosie were disappointed that only grownup cows had moved in, but then they saw Lily. She had been hiding behind her mother, as she was a little scared for all the new things. Snowbell and Rosie approached Lily and soon she too was best friends with Snowbell and Rosie.

Again time passed and the farm was expanded yet again, this time with apple and cherry trees. Snowbell, Rosie and Lily loved to play between the trees, their favorite game was hide and seek – which they played almost every day.

The years passed and the three friends grow older, but despite there differences, they stayed together as best friends, and lived happily ever after.

How alone could be a tiny calf, thought Rosa gloomily.
Rosa was a tiny calf, which would soon grow so large that she was a heifer. But now she was so alone, after a major fire had had burnt down the entire farm and all the animals died. Although Rosas mother. But I did not think about Rosa, it was too gloomy. So Rosa went there himself in the nerbrunna ruins on the farm. But then she heard a familiar sound, a tractor! It meant that there was someone after all, even though it was a human and not a cow, but it did not bother about Rosa. She ran to her small calf bone away to the tractor.

"There, there Rosa," said a familiar voice. It was Ophelia, the farmer, who came to see all the devastation.
"There, there Rosa, my little calf," continue Ofelia. "Everything will be fine, I'll find new friends for you but I do not find a new mother for you so I'll be your mother."
Pink Muad that answer, but what came was a gloomy mu. She wanted her mother now.

A few days later heard tractor sounds again and even mass animal sounds. It bellowed, croaking, the horse was giving a happy sound, the sheep was heard long way and was cruelly. Now Rosa happy, she got lots of new friends. Then after a few months got the new stables and surfaces to play on. Everything went well in the end, though the great fire that ravaged.

I wrote this in Swedish and used google translate so the English is bad. But here the orginal story.

    Cow

    How come a cow
    Never says "Ow!"
    Whenever there's milking to do?
    It doesn't say "Ow!"
    For it pleases the cow,
So instead, the cow says "Moo!"

    The Farm

    The Orphan's Holiday

The good folk of the Goodgame community have decided to give the children in the orphanage a holiday in the countryside and have a week staying on a farm. Monica has got a hot deal and hired a bus and Steve is going to drive and fetch them. Everyone has agreed to help out although Lester thinks the children may frighten the hens!

On Monday the children arrive, they are really excited to see the animals. Vicky is going to teach them how about how to take care of the animals and George is going to show them how to feed them, just as soon as he remembers where he put the chicken feed!

On Tuesday Monty comes to entertain the children with a treasure hunt. He has hidden clues all over the farm, but will they be lucky enough to find them all?

After splashing in the waterfalls on Wednesday the children are really hungry. Eva is going to make some organic apple juice and Matilda has baked some delicious cookies to keep them going till supper time!

It’s Thursday and the week is nearly over. Daniel has made lots of scrap books from things that he has collected on his travels; he thinks the children will enjoy making them too. He helps the children find feathers, leaves and blossom to put in their scrap books.

It’s Friday and Tessa has come to help keep the children entertained. She does lots of craft with her scout troop so she is going to teach them some country crafts. Lilly has come to help and has brought some flowers to press so they can make pictures. Benny helps them make wooden boats to race in the stream but look out the twins have come along and one of them has fallen in, now which one is it, Jack or Jim?

It’s the children’s last day; they have had a wonderful week and want to have something to remember all the fun they have had. Rita is going to use her journalist’s skills to help the children take photographs, just wait for her to finish her latte and she’ll be right there. She can’t wait to write an article about how much the children have enjoyed their holiday! Thanks everyone at Goodgame we’ve all had such fun!

Here at Big Oak Farm we have been very busy getting supplies ready for the royal banquet. People might think doing this is easy, after all, you just sow some seeds and later collect the harvest or feed the chickens et voila! there are eggs. But there is so much more involved with farming.

We farmers have to get up early in the morning because there is more going on than cabbage and poultry husbandry. There are pigs to feed, cows to milk and of course, employees to keep busy and happy. After the livestock is taken care of we than go off to the orchards to collect apples and cherries for the cafe. Than we check on the cabbage fields. If they are ready to harvest than we do so and get the cabbages to the banquet kitchens ASAP and replant. Same with the eggs. We had a surplus of corn in the barn so we were able to fulfill the royal request quite quickly there and have not had to spend much time and resources planting and harvesting corn. Shame this is not true of the cabbages which have been an ongoing ordeal. So much so we have had a few workers threaten to quit on us so we decided it was time to upgrade an cabin and put them in that duty as a form of relief. this has turned many a frown upside down.

The weather has been pleasant enough, though we could use some rain in the next couple of days to keep that cabbage in tip top shape. Well, here’s to a great banquet

    HARVEST DAYS

The 3 dogs, Mick, Maxx and Jacks were very sad. The were sitting at the door at the big farm house looking out on the rain.

The farmer was sad, and his wife was sad. It was suppose to be harvest! The wheat and barley was ready, but the rain kept pouring.
The all went to bed, hoping that the next day would be better.
In the morning, they woke op and the sun was shining :)
The dogs jumped out of their beds an ran out in the sun, playing and chasing around.
When everything was dried up, the big harvester started to work, the farmers wife made food for all the workers.
At dinner time, the dog jump in to the car and they all drove to the fields with the supper.
The harvester stopped for a while, table was set, and while the workers was eating, the dogs played in the hay and tried to catch the mice.
The sun was shining for the next 10 days, and all the wheat and barley was harvested and placed in the big barn.
Everybody was happy, and they made a big harvest party.
The 3 dogs were very tired and were lying under the table, listening to all the happy people :)

a battle had been lost the farm was a blaze in fire the animal lie dying .But a few was safe with us as we move quickly away. after several week a valley was found to start again. At first we and the animal all lived in one small house that was quickly built . Marks were left on the way that only us on the farm would know how to find their way to the valley in the dessert. Spring arrive it was along hard winter but happy that more make it then we thought . We have 40 member of the farm but over 200 lost in the bitter invasion. here in this our ancient land of hidden valleys - we will rebuilt the farm with bessie the chichen and henry the rooster already ,she has 12 new chicks . porky the pig and harriet has 25 piglet , Robyn the cow and big boy has twin calf and many more that we salvage along the way . many year have now past the farm has grown with a chick here and a oink their with a cow moo in the green pasture . the farm is a buzy with new life an goal their young a marrying and grandchildren a playing .Life is good on this ancient hiding place of our forefathers As I sit looking across the valley I wonder why did we ever leave then I rember what my father told me take care of the land and leave place for wild things . and the land will be produce so we have new law to protect the land from being damage so the farm can continue to be as long as their children and grandchildren to playing in the meadows.Milk the cows, pick the eggs , car for the pigs eat the apple and cherry , harvest the feilds the farm will keep growing forever

once upon a time there was a lonely little farmer who only had his animals to keep him company. He had 2 chickens and just one pig. He fed them when he could, he tried to make feed but his windmill was faulty, He wasn't very rich so maintenance came around when he could afford it. He had two little fields which he ploughed, he sowed corn, cabbage and wheat. One day someone came knocking on his door, and asked him to join their co-operative and make farming a little easier. He was so happy to have a friend to farm with, that he planted wildflowers and put them all in his workers houses to make them happy too. His farm started running a lot better after he discovered that his workers liked to sit under a shady tree on their breaks. So he planted plenty of trees which made all his workers super happy and they worked harder than they had ever before. They worked so hard they were able to fix and put in some upgrades to the windmill and buy another chicken coop. The Farm was growing and actually earning some money to be able to buy some more land and expand the farm. They were on their way to a successful happy farm.

    The Farm:

    There once was a chicken of highest distinction;
the happiest one of the bunch.
Her father, her mother, and 36 brothers
were eating their corn feed for lunch.
Content on the farm, all happy and warm,
    the chicken laid eggs full of love;
She did not reject, but would keenly inspect
the white hand cursor floating above.
The eggs and the poop in her level five coop
    would be magically whisked away,
And the familiar sounds on the rest of the grounds
would signal the start of her day.

Now a piggie had heard, from the happy yard bird,
that playtime was where it was at.
But he couldn’t stop eating what Farmer was feeding
and soon he was really quite fat!
This piggy, you see, would just grunt “wee wee wee”
when talking to his chicken buddy,
Advice he was missin’, cuz he didn’t listen,
and spent the whole day getting muddy.
The chicken was stunned – said “Looky here, son.
You’ve got no eggs here for the takin’.
You think fat is funny but farmers need money
so if you’re not skinny, you’re bacon!”

Piggie squealed, “No, no, no! You can’t let me go!
    I’ll get a sick-note from the vet!
“Cuz I’m a fun dude, and not people food!
Maybe I’ll be some lucky kid’s pet!”
    The pig said goodbye and went back to his sty;
the chicken went back to her family.
The pig was a winner and would not be dinner!
    The chicken was proud, yessiree!
To conclude I will say that the moral today
is to listen and not make things tricky.
In life, as in play, you should have fun and say
I will always take sauce from my chicky.

    Home for the Harvest

It’s been a long hard summer, so the coming fall is welcomed by all. Most welcome of all is the letter letting us know that the kids will be coming home to help with the harvest. Pa and I had no problem handling the day to day work, but we had been wondering how we were going to manage the harvest on our own. After all, we weren’t the youngsters we used to be.

We had discussed asking the kids to leave college to come home and help with the harvest, but remembered our own childhood experiences. Although neither of us had attended college, we remember having to miss the first week of school to make sure the harvest was finished. It was Junior’s first year at college and Sally’s final year, so we didn’t want them to miss all the fall events.

How blessed we felt to know that they were both willing to come home to help us with the farm at harvest time. This will be the best harvest we’ve had in years, all because of the love of our children.

Benny got up early some weeks ago to plant a crop of roses. He had heard that Eva from the bee farm loved roses and he really wanted her to like him.

This morning, like every morning over the past weeks, he went to check the roses. He mulched, watered, removed damaged leaves and did everything he could to make the roses look perfect.

However, today was not like all the other days. Eva had arrived to say she had lost her bees and would like some help to get them back.

Benny thought this was a perfect way to show Eva how much he liked her. He would find all her bees and maybe she would be so happy she would agree to go out with him.

Benny neglected all his other duties that day in his endeavour to impress Eva by finding all her bees. Unfortunately, the bees did not want to go back and they stung Benny when he tried to catch them.

Poor Benny - his face swelled where the bees had stung him. He thought that if he put some honey on his face, the medicinal properties in the honey would ease the pain and swelling.

He hurried to the flower farm to get some honey. After smoothing the honey over his sore face, he raced back to the farm to continue his endeavour to collect all the bees for Eva.

To his astonishment, the bees all flew to him because they smelled the honey on his face.

At that moment, Eva saw him and was so delighted that he had found her bees and thought that he was so clever to put honey on himself to attract them.

And like all good fairy tales, they lived happily ever after lol

Don't worry guys, I'm not officially entered in this competition, I'm participating for the fun of it. :)

    Lilly finds an adventure

Lilly the ladybug wandered along the paddock fence wearing her favourite set of rain boots. They were a striking pink with fluorescent green diagonal strips which clashed horribly with her beautiful, shiny red shell.

Being a particularly wet and miserable day, all of Lilly’s brothers and sisters were tucked up inside their cosy home, finding ways to pass the time. Lilly was bored with that though. She wanted a day filled with adventure, a day that was more exciting than making cupcakes and fighting with her siblings.

So along the fence Lilly wandered, avoiding puddles of water and splinters of wood. Eventually, she came to two sheep standing by the fence on one side of her, and a cow meandering around the paddock on the other.
“Hello sheep” she said with a slight lisp. “My name is Lilly”.

The first sheep just stared at Lilly. As Lilly was about to introduce herself again, the other sheep moved closer.

“Good morning to you, young Ladybug. It’s a nasty day today isn’t it?”

    “Yes, it certainly is.”

“Why are you out and about in the cold when you could be all warm and cosy?” asked the second sheep.

“I want a grand adventure and lots of excitement!”

“Where are you going to find that?”

“I’m not exactly sure”, Lilly sighed. I just know that I don’t want to bake any more cupcakes.”

The second sheep shook her head. “And what exactly is wrong with cupcakes?”

“Well nothing really, I guess. It’s just not as fun as an adventure. An adventure is something I can talk about and everybody will look at me with awe.” Lilly closed her eyes and imagined herself the center of attention, telling all her brothers and sisters about this incredible adventure she was about to have.

The first sheep looked at Lilly and snorted in disdain. Just then, her nose started twitching. It twitched, and it twitched until she could no longer control the almighty sneeze that shook her entire body.

Poor Lilly took the full brunt of the sneeze and was thrown backwards into the cows’ paddock, right into a nice big fresh deposit of cow dung.

Picking herself out of cow patty, she shook off as much of the muck as she could while the first sheep watched, laughing hysterically. This wasn’t exactly the adventure that Lilly had been looking for today but she realised something important - making cupcakes wasn’t really so bad after all.

Tom Blenham noticed the milk transporter hadn't arrived by midday. Some of these young, part time drivers had no idea how to change a flat tyre on the mighty rigs. Tom smiled. Ones like that showy, likeable chap Monty whom Tom's sixteen year old daughter, Joan was so keen on.

Wearing his top hat, and twirling his impressive moustaches, Monty was better suited to driving around with his Wheel of Fortune. He'd have to ring in for help. It might be hours before Tom's milk was collected.

Perhaps a new driver had become lost? The farm was isolated, far from the town picturesquely located at the river's bend. Tom turned his thoughts to lunch. He enjoyed an additional round of bread, butter and cherry jam with the lesser rations his wife Maggie had left out ready. After inspecting the online livestock report he went off on the blue tractor to repair fences.

Maggie and Norah Grimshaw had been delivering Meals on Wheels that day and had not noticed the milk transporter on their route. Tom found out that none of his neighbours had had their milk picked up either, and no one had recieved any notification.

That night Tom did not sleep well. No piercing sound of hydraulic brakes pulling up outside the dairy had interrupted the eventual silence of the night, nor the early birdsong. The phone rang as Tom was boiling the kettle at dawn.

"Turn on your television!" yelled the voice of his neighbour, Sandy Allen. "Jas Grimshaw absconded with the Nica Dairy Co funds. Thats what they are saying," Sandy continued yelling. "That reporter, Rita Mercury, you know the one who usually writes for the Racing Farmer, is outside the processing plant interviewing the stunned workers."

The early news showed that all the milk transporters were parked inside the Nica grounds, like enormous, silvery ghosts. The buildings were empty and the gates locked. In a few days he would have to throw milk out, Tom realized as he watched, gloomily. He stirred himself, the cows still had to be milked, regardless. Usually he took the ladies a cup of tea before going out. Let them sleep on he decided.

As Joan awoke she caught the fragment of a dream. A carrot, dressed in a tophat. That's the answer. A carrot would provide the main focus in her agricultural show entry. And perhaps Monty would notice her.

    MY LIFE

There is a game I love to play
if my husband knew, he would say "NAY!"

The name is Goodgame Big Farm
    Now wherein lies the harm
    I hear you say?
It's because I play it all the day!

Nothing around the house gets done
because to play is such fun!

Oh I can while away the hours
I even have a shop to sell flowers
    chickens, cows and pigs too
so much dung - flies! shoo! shoo!!

My co-op friends I get to see
everyday as I water their tree

Events arrive with new things to do
leave the computer - I couldn't possibly do!
There is a castle, a tea garden and waterfall
to win these I must give it my all

I used to have a life once...
Give this up? Are you a dunce!!!!

    THE FARM

How good it is to live on a farm, early morn to the barn to see what the day will bring, from my lovely animals that I've grown. To the fields to see what has grown. Tend to all young and old. Enter the orchards to be amazed by my apples and cherries, 'OH MY'.

When your hungry, step into my resturante to feast on the fruits of my labour. Have some eggs or an apple pie, yours to choose, you won't denied. So if you like what you read then take a trip and see, the splendor that is called 'THE FARM'.

    Jack the Farmhand

The crowing of the rooster woke Jack up. Was it that time already?
He quickly put on his red shirt and his pants with suspenders and headed downstairs. Next to the back door was his pitchfork which he casually carried on his shoulder on his way to the fields. In the distance he could see the wheat was ready to be harvested so he started to walk a bit faster.

“I really hope I won’t find any of those storybook pages again, silly people who let the wind blow away their books every so often.” Jack mumbled to himself. He had been having a bit of trouble lately with some unusual stuff finding its way on to the farm. Last week he even found some map pieces which looked like they belonged to a pirates treasure map. When he came around the corner of the Magnificent Tea Garden he bumped into Delores, the maid of the farm who was wearing her usual outfit consisting of a purple dress with pink apron. He barely caught her arm in time to avoid her falling into one of the many, many Lakes.

“Wow, that was a close one Jack, I almost had to go back home and change” she said shocked, straightening her apron in the process. But Jack didn’t have eyes for her, he was looking up ahead. There, in the distance, came the Big Floating Hand again. He had experienced it many times before and this occasion was like any other.
When the BFH started to zoom around the head of the farm boy and almost knocking his cap off, the boy started to walk faster, urged on by this godly presence. When it changed its focus to the pretty farmers daughter she turned away from it, annoyed that it had disturbed her peace.
Then it came flying towards Delores and Jack. At first Delores panicked and started to run away, but when it reached her she froze in fear. She closed her eyes and started counting to ten, wishing it would be gone when she opened them again.

Jack had seen this unfold many times and he always did the same. He would attract the attention of the BFH and would start walking to wherever he needed to go, ignoring the Hand flying around him while trying to keep his composure.
But he wasn’t afraid, he was never afraid.
You see, Jack was part of the “special forces ninja samurai commando elite fighting unit” before becoming a farmer. He had seen things, things that keep a man up at night.
So every time the Big Floating Hand would come and disturb the peace at the farm he would attract its attention so he alone carried the burden and diverted the stress away from his fellow farming folk.

So next time you are bugging those innocent people, remember this story, remember the sacrifices Jack has to make in order to keep everyone calm.

But most of all, remember, to never do drugs.

One early morning Eva awake to the chirping of the birds in her friend´s farm Tessa. It was Eva´s first day in the farm and she was very excited to see the animals that Tessa told her about in great detail.

-Tessa, are you awake? I want to help your grandpa to milk the cow and brush the horses.
-Great idea, Eva. Let´s do that so we can ride horses right after!

After a good cup of milk and a piece of apple pie from the orchard, the two of them rode through the garden. The garden was limited to one side by a hedge of raspberries and blackberries and the other side by wild roses that perfumed the surroundings. They reached the pond and they stopped to rest on a bed of purple and white spades.

-It feels so good in here! - said Eva.
-Yes, so relaxing- answered Tessa- But it will be better if I had not this bothering me!
-What´s that? Looks like a seed?- said Eva- But it´s so strange!

Underneath Tessa, a small, rare seed appeared. It had the size of a chestnut, roughened and black. On top of the seed, there were a lot of orange coloured fibers. It looked like a hat made out of noodles!!! Intrigued by the new discovery, they went to ask Tessa´s grandpa if he could recognize that seed. George, her grandfather, had never seen something like that and he suggested to plant it. Tessa grabbed a shovel and digged a whole underneath the walnut tree. Eva said:

-Are you just gonna plant it like that? You don´t even know how much sunlight or water it´ll need.
-I know that the walnut tree will take good care of it. Tessa replied. Guided by her instincts, she planted the seed.

From that moment, Tessa and Eva visited the walnut tree to see if the seed had germinated when one morning:

-Look Eva! The seed has sprouted!

Eva clapped excited. They were so happy! Thanks to all the care treatment of the two girls, from the seed, the biggest tree of the garden came out. It´s palmate leaves shade and shelter for many insects and it´s flowers attracted thousands of butterflies! Eva and Tessa were so proud of their work. They´d given birth the most beautiful tree in the whole farm.

“Tessa! Tessa! Tessa!” While reading a book on her lovely porch, Tessa looks up to see where the voice is coming from. Steve is running towards her as fast as his age allows him. While Steve is catching his breath Tessa pours him a cold lemonade and hands it to him. Gratefully Steve takes a few sips and starts to tell what’s wrong. “I was fixing the fence of the pig stables. Just with any normal maintenance work I walked around the stable to see the state of it.” He pauses for a sec and takes another sip from the lemonade. “Then I noticed a big hole in the fence and as it happens that is very close to the main entrance of the farm itself.” Tessa can’t help to feel slightly worried but encourages Steve to go on. “So I called for Vicky and together we counted the pigs…” “And?” asks Tessa. “We are missing four of them.” Tessa takes a look at the seriousness on the face of Steve and then grabs her hat. “Come on, we have to go look for them.”

Across of the farm there is a small path and Tessa, Steve and Vicky decide to continue down the path in hope that the pigs did the same. It is not long after that Tessa discovers some marks in the mud beside the path. “I believe we are on the right track,” she says with a smile. “Do you hear that?” Vicky and Tessa try to figure out what Steve means, but then they hear the trickling of water. “Where there is water there is mud, where there is mud there are pigs.” “I hope you’re right Tessa,” says Vicky.

Together they continue through the tall grass towards the sounds of the water. Tessa is walking in front of them and suddenly falls down. The uneven ground caused her to fall. While she is standing up, Steve and Vicky are laughing at her. “What?” “Where there is mud there are pigs, and the mud is all over you!” Tessa takes a look at her muddy self and starts to laugh as well. The sound of their voices attracted something because something or someone is stepping towards them. When they turn their heads, they can see the four pigs happily smiling and covered in glistering mud. “Come on guys,” Tessa smiles, “time to go home.”

It's harvest season! Up early to check on the cows. They are all still grazing happily in the pastures. There's a nip in the air, but no snow yet so they will get to stay out there for a while yet. Collect the eggs from the chickens and give them some feed. The pig gets the scraps from the kitchen - he's starting to look more like bacon all the time...
The sun is up now, and the breeze has dried off the dew. Time to start up the combine and check if the wheat is dry enough. It's working, so my husband will be running the combine for the rest of the day. Send the hired hand out to check the hay - those cows will need to be fed come winter. It's dry, too, so there she goes with the tractor and baler. Almost lunch time - make some sandwiches, tomatoes, lettuce, ham & goat cheese on homemade bread, and bring them out to husband and hired hand. Pick some mixed vegetables from the garden and chop them up to put in the freezer for cabbage soup later on. There's always something to do on the farm!

    The Guardian Dragons

Our farm has a guardian dragon at the gate. It looks very old, moss covered; during the summer, the vines have to be cleared off it every month. Grandma told me her grandmother told how our family came to have this wonderful friend.

Back in the distant past our family lived in the mountains, close to a dragon cave. One year it didn’t rain, and the streams started to dry up. One little baby dragon was too small to fly to water and started to weaken day by day. The family was suffering on that hot dry mountain so they decided to move down in the valley where a river brought water from far away. That’s when they moved down and started this farm. The dragon clan sent the dying baby with them; he started to recover as soon as they reached the river.

The farm grew slowly for the first few years, clearing land to plow and plant was hard work. Then one day Sparky, the baby dragon found a porous yellowish rock; it smelled good, so he started licking and chewing on it. A small piece caught in his throat and he coughed; flames shoot out. He was chewing on brimstone. After that they called him Flamer, the ashes from the trees he burned down for us enriched the earth. Clearing the land was fast and easy.

It had been 20 years since the family came down from the mountains; the land was cleared; the farm had grown to the size it is today. Flamer was a handsome, 12 foot, grown dragon; he needed to return to his own kind and find his life mate. Together Flamer and the family carved the stone dragon that you see before you; Flamer vowed his family would guard our family and farm forever.

Sometimes, late on a hot summer night, I think, I see the shadow of a dragon drinking from the river.

    The Salamander's Way

My grandfather told me he had enjoyed a good life; he said it was because of the magic salamander that lives by the water tower on our farm. He knew I’d always thought the water tower a wondrous place, and he does like to tell a good story.

On a hot summer night he camped out by the old water tower; he thought it would be cool there. He was just drifting off to sleep when a he felt a dampness climbing his leg. Looking down he saw a brown salamander with yellowing specks on its back; he said it was wearing glasses. Grandpa picked the salamander up and brought it close to his face. He told it hello and to his surprise it spoke back to him. The salamander told him that the secret to a happy life was simple. “You need to find the fun in everything you do; then you can enjoy life no matter where you are. The fun is there; just find it for yourself. Help others find it and you’ll be loved.” I know my grandfather has lived his life the salamander’s way. He is always so full of love and fun, making life on the family farm a delight.

I went to the old water tower that very night; there were many salamanders living there. I knew there would always be magic salamanders for my family to find and enjoy.

    Fireflies by the Lake

The day had been scorching hot; I’m not sure I like being grown enough to work in the fields for the summer. I could smell the sweet BBQ Maw was cooking as I walked toward the houses; she hadn’t wanted to make the house any hotter inside this evening. I saw my little brother, Jim, chasing the dog; he is always moving, excited with life. When he passed by I grabbed his hands and gave him a twirl; he was laughing when I put him down and gave me a hug. Passing the table I grabbed a water bottle from the ice tub and went to sit under the old willow by the lakeside. Maw called after me, “Dinner in half an hour. Wash some of that dirt off.”

After dinner, the sun was sinking fast, the fireflies started twinkling, blinking off and on. Jim started chasing the lights. I remembered a few years ago catching them in an old jar. “Maw, can Jim and I have a couple of old jars? I want to take him firefly catching.”

“There are a couple of old ones under the sink in the kitchen; you better use the ice pick and put a few holes in the lid for air.” I ran to the house with Jam following behind. I knew he wanted to punch the holes. I told him to be careful and helped him get the holes punched without hurting himself.

Jim has more energy than me; I must have used it up working in that hot sun all day. I kept sitting down and skipping rocks across the lake, but Jim very determinedly forced me to help catch those fireflies. Finally we have two jars full of twinkling lights. When we took them back to Maw, she asks us what we are going to do with them. Jim looked hard at the jars and saw that there are a couple of dead flies on the bottom. “We have to let them go before they all die.” he answered her. He looked so cute waving bye as the fireflies twinkle away into the night.

I smiled to myself and yawned wide. “Time for a bath and bed.“, Maw told Jim and me. It has been a good day.
