  You can only get your dollars back for hiring researchers, but researchers payed for with gold, you can't, everything you have donated, you won't be able to get back either

  Sorry for your bad luck, Space Girl. I've clicked on the wrong spot and lost gold too. And like you, my gold is saved, not bought. I'm a more careful clicker now.

  I also clicked the hire with gold option... but luck for me at that time my mouse was not connected properly.. then i realized that the option is gold and hired with money .
  
  I was lucky there but accidentally the fast forward was clicked on some other work and lost gold in that ;(
