Fishing equipment question

Blackwater (US1)Blackwater (US1) US1 Posts: 21
If I'm going for shrimp, for example, do the trawls stack leading to more shrimp caught or is bringing just one sufficient?

Also, what is the food from the Mermaid restaurant used for? I made the first recipe but all it says is something about seeds, which doesn't make much sense.

Sorry for the basic questions but a lot of things in this game are explained very poorly and for such an old game I find surprisingly very little help online about it.

No worries. most help is found from fellow players. For now, you're in the right spot ;)

If you send a boat to a pool that contains Oyster, Clam and Shrimp, and do not load it with any equipment such as trawls, the boat will automatically catch some of each type of fish.

Loading the boat with various people and/or freezers will catch a few more fish

The only reason you would need a trawl is if you only want to catch the shrimp and no oyster and no clam. It does not provide extra fish, just will only catch that specific type.

Most of the time I do not use that equipment. But if/when you do want to, you will only need 1 per boat.

For the most part, Mermaid Bay dishes can just be sold for some income. I tend to keep some in stock though as they are occasionally asked for in market contracts.
Depending on the level of your coop village, some Mermaid Bay items are requested at the Adventurer's Boat in the village.
1 recipe is used as an ingredient for Travelers Lunchbox made in the Gourmet Farm Bakery.
That is all I can recall about these recipes for now, I might be forgetting a use though.
    Good luck !

Thank you very much for the reply. Do you know what the "seeds" is in reference to? It's listed on every recipe info page and the amount increases for each unlocked recipe, I can't for the life of me figure out what it applies to.

    Thanks again.

It looks like some kind of language error to me, it certainly makes no sense!  Perhaps for "seeds" we should read "ingredients"

  • You're probably right, I'll just ignore it for now.

@Blackwater (US1) perhaps provide a screenshot of what you see and we will try to decipher it for you

I'm not very clever with screenshots but if you open mermaid Bay and the hover on the (I), Information button of any recipe, you'll see what he;s talking about.  (Something I had never done till he mentioned it lol)
  • Here you go, the further down the list you go the higher the "seeds" cost goes up. Also, got any links in english? lol

if you right-click anywhere on the page, (German) you may be allowed to translate to English

  • I don't have those options, I'm using Firefox. Not a big deal though.
  • In one of the events I was awarded a deep sea boat. I believe it's the second one you unlock. I already had a full fleet of the starter boats, and can't find the one I earned through the event anywhere. Do I first have to upgrade the dockyard to gain access to this boat, or is it simply lost because I had 14 motorboats already?

I even demolished one of the motorboats thinking it would free up a slot for the new one but that doesn't appear to be the case.

You're talking about the Runabout, which is the second boat you unlock. You can find your Fishing Hard Worker Event (FHWE) reward boats if you go to the fishing region and look at your inventory:

Do I first have to upgrade the dockyard to gain access to this boat, or is it simply lost because I had 14 motorboats already?
You would have to reach level 30 first to be able to build the Runabout:

I do not remember if you have to upgrade the dockyard to level 2 first before building your Runabout from your inventory.
  • If you win boats in Fishing Hard Worker Event, you can build them even if you are not yet at the level required to usually build.
  • Thanks for the responses, for some reason I never thought to look at my inventory in the fishing area which should've been the first place I looked lol. My brain is special sometimes.
  • Is upgrading the lower level boats, like the motorboat, worth it? Do people do that or do they just wait for the next boat to unlock and then start upgrading when they finally have access to the last one?

First time around I upgraded. Second time around I just waited.

I did an analysis a while back, and it was definitely worth it to upgrade your boats.  You easily make back the money spent.  Also note, when you destroy the boats as you move up to higher level boats, you get some of your money back.

This is one that will depend on the player - you'll have to decide for yourself amongst the suggestions.
As some players progress at different speeds and many have different play time constraints, different strategies work for different players - none of them are wrong - it's just that different ways work better for some than others.

I prefer to NOT upgrade the motorboat, the runabouts only to level 2, never buy a wherry, but get to the skipjacks as quickly as possible and definitely upgrade them to at least level 4 or 5. If you play the fishing HWE, you will win some boats & those can be very helpful.

    There are a few youtube videos on the Deep Sea Fishing (DSF). A lot of them are great, my 2 favorites are from FarmerDeb and Nina.  I once wrote up a little something here in forum with my suggestion of boat building, you can read it here;

(this other thread also contains a link to Farmer Deb's DSF video)
  • Thanks for the responses everyone, very helpful.

One other question, which is unrelated to fishing but I don't want to start a new thread. When you skip a contract, does it lower the level of the contract provider? I had most of my contracts coming from level 20-25 people, the last day or so I've skipped most of them and now all I'm getting is level 0-5's now.

I read an older thread that said you can skip however many you want without consequence, but it was a few years old so I'm not sure if that info is still good. My experience is that it lowers the contract level but maybe something else I'm unaware of caused them all to be reset.

No worries, happy to help :)
If you skip a lot, it will lower them - but as far as I know for the organic & fishing markets, it's based on the # of items requested.

Some players prefer to fill contracts that ask for only 1, or maybe even 2 different types of items, and trash all that ask for 3 or more different items.

For those that do this, the level of their 1 (or 1-2) item contracts will continue to go up, while the others will stay at level zero.

The strategy behind this is once you start to use Lester's secret stash, he helps with only 1 item per contract - so in a 1 item contract you contribute less items for the same payout. If you have a contract with 2 or more items, you have to give 100% of all items except the 1 that Lester is helping with.

I'm not sure where you saw that note, or which market it was referring to.  Things in the game do get changed sometimes, and also there are 2 more markets that will be available at higher game levels (the dairy market and the obsidian market) that each work a little differently than the organic and fishing markets. Is there a chance the note you read might have pertained to one of them?
  • Nah, it was about the organic market...a thread from this forum from 2016. Conflicting info with some saying their contracts didn't go down while others say they did.

Good info again though, thank you. I forgot about Lester's Stash and think I'm going to use that strategy of "leveling up" only my 1 and 2 item contracts.

Thanks for the link - that helped

I think once up to L-99 contracts, it takes a few more declines before they start to decrease in level, which might explain what they were saying. At the lower levels, it just might drop levels a bit more quickly  (I could be wrong, but that's what I've noticed)
The ones I have at L-99, I do decline some, just not most and even declining a few I stay at L-99. Once, I did drop down to L-97 though, but soon got it back up.

Good luck with it all :)

Also if a contract gives a lot of extras over and above dollars you are 'paying' for those extras by getting less cash

I only accept contracts with dollars +1 item
  • Heather Norsk (US1)Heather Norsk (US1) US1 Posts: 7,346
    Good point Rosy !

For me, it depends on the item. XP (regular or fishing) seems to be a fairly cheap item, we don't end up paying a lot for those.
For eg; on fishing contracts, if deco parts are included with XP, I'll take both as both are cheap. But if a token or seaweed humus is offered, even as the only item, I usually pass ;)

Any ship will catch shrimp if the ship is sent to one of the pools with shrimp in it. if you just want to catch shrimp then add a "Trawl" into one of the spots on your ship. The amount of fish caught will depend on the type of ship and level sent to the pool.
Think most folks will find that just using two types of crews will give the most profit. I suggest to only use the "Travel Speed" crew right for your ships and the right "Fish Caught Per Hour" crew. If in need of a special group of fish then add the right "Equipment" to catch that type of fish.
