What to look for when choosing a co-op

My wife and I are about two weeks into playing this game (separate accounts on US1 server), and are starting to explore the idea of joining a co-op.  We have been contacted by some co-ops looking for members, but haven't responded yet.  What do people look for when joining a co-op?  I've read some of the primers on co-ops (e.g. CrazyBigFarm, and in game help), and I am looking for the views of experienced players.  One aspect is that it sounds like some of the higher co-ops have completed their research, so as a new member, I believe we would get instant benefits.  On the other hand, we would have missed out on growing the co-op with this type of co-op.  If you had a choice on joining a co-op at the beginning again, would you rather go with a well established co-op, or one starting out so you can experience growing the co-op and possible camaraderie with the shared experience.  What other things do you think is important in choosing a co-op?  How would you know if a co-op would be a good fit for you?

It depends on your activity and how involved you are in competing in events. If you are not too interested in the events, then any cooperative that has the research completed should be good. Otherwise you contact players in higher-ranked cooperatives for more information about it in your server. You can join some cooperatives that doesn't have all the research completed, but it can probably take an extremely long amount of time to get the players necessary to complete the research.

My first question would be "Do you intend to spend real money on this game"  Gold buyers tend to congregate in the top few co-ops which tend to be high-power, high-pressure affairs and would not be my choice.
imo, most small, start-up co-ops never make it, they just fade away because there are just too many advantages for co-ops with more members.
Be aware that the better co-ops often have level requirements for new recruits, must be above level 30 or whatever. I recently started over on a different server. ad joined a small co-op temporarily whilst I leveled up and researched the better co-ops. (For me, the level of their Horse Meadow was important). Having got a shortlist you can always message the co-op leader with any questions.

It's also nice to be in a smaller coop when you like to get to know each other.  Some people just don't chat or follow directions well via in-game email. In our coop, I have actually met some of the people and that was fun after playing together for so long. I wouldn't want the larger coops due to the pressure to buy gold and do specific events "or else". Maybe a chat w/ the leader before joining would be a good idea.  I get a kick out of the opening page on some coops... I can tell immediately, I wouldn't want to join! LOL  Scooby Mystery is always looking for fun, active players. Our primary players are retired and enjoy chatting now and then.

We are pretty active, have done several of the events (but not all), and both are at least level 30/31 right now (again, we only started around 2 weeks ago).  We almost never spend real money in a game.  We will participate in the co-op chats.  We are a little older, in the 40-60 year range.

I was the leader of one of the top 50 alliances in Galaxy Life (which died about 5 years ago due to hackers), and am the godfather for a family in Goodgame Gangster on the agame.com website which got to be the second best family (they just took down the web page a couple of days ago; the game was Flash based, which dies at the end of the year; I am still playing because the server is still up and I haven't logged out, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get back into the game).  My wife similarly gets into games, but they are just games, and we do have other things to do in life as well.

How many people are needed to effectively do research in a co-op?  With over 3000 co-ops in the US1 server, it is a lot to look over, so it would be nice to find ways to quickly reduce the number to something more managable.  Obviously, ones that are not looking for members will eliminate some, but that still seems to leave most.

Thank you to everyone that has so far responded.  You have provided valuable insights that we will use when evaluating co-ops.  I invite additional comments.

In this game, you can usually do well without making in-game purchases in events, but you have to develop some effective strategies to be able to do well.

It sounds like you and your wife like to do well in the games you play so it would be a good idea to look for a larger cooperative to do well in events together. If you try to get in the top few, they may have very high expectations that would either require a high level of activity or a large amount of in-game purchases so I would suggest looking for some cooperative that may have a good balance between doing well and the amount of time spent in-game.

Since the US server is the largest English speaking server, you may want to check this section as there are many advertisements of cooperatives from that server and you can try talking with a few leaders to see what their expectations are and if they match your expectations.
