Deep sea fishing question

Well I think someone answered this in one of the coops I'm in, just double checking.

So getting ready to send out my ships.  EVERY POOL has less than an hour to go.  But the ships take over 6 hours to get there.    So what happens?  Do they use up six hours to get there only to have nothing there?  (I never really look at what each one comes back with, they get what they get.)

OR does the pool reset before the ship arrives?  So thinking I'm sending for shrimp they might come back with lobsters?

OR do they just turn back in an hour?

What I was told is they get what they normally would but the pools don't respawn.  (not really sure what that means.  There are always pools enough to send ships to.)

Lastly…. is this part of good games master plan?   Offer up these whopping huge contracts, and the ONE thing I'm short of, never shows up?   Like for weeks at a time not one?   WTH?

  • Respawn means a new pool, likely not spawn immediately. I've read the boats will get what they went for. I get pools with a variety daily, thats all I send the boats out.

The pools will not reset until all boats are clear.

Even if the pool only has 1 second left, as long as you assigned a boat to it before that second runs out, the boat will stay there for the amount of travel time and catch the fish that is equivalent to that particular boat.

AAAHHH.  Ok, I got a handle on it now.  Thanks.
  • Is there certain boats and levels that lose more fish to disasters?  I try not to fish the far pools because not only the time is excessive but the boats come home with much fewer fish, I know the percentage is listed but it is really disheartening to have the level 1 skipjack come home with a 24 fish loss.  It had 72 fish 24 of each and lost 8 of each.  I am not able to upgrade this boat for a long time to come, same with the Werry, I am not at a level to upgrade.  I do have a level 6 Werry and it seems to come back with more fish and less loss then the two level 1, I am about to demolish the skipjack if it can't come back with a reasonable amount of fish, the profits really plummet when 1/4 of the fish are gone. According to the pool there was a possibility of a 17% loss not a 25% loss.

There will always be a chance, a % that each fish pool will have a possibility of you loosing fish to disasters.
Here is some great information on the deep sea area.

  • So you can't rely on the posted % chance?

Up to a point, if you click on the pool and click "go fishing" the % of hazard in the top left corner of the menu is for every hazard!
So if it says 17%, that goes for sharks, storms etc. max loss could be 5X17=85%!
Not that that ever happened to me, but 17% loss is certainly not the max :#

I worked the figures on protection, your overall fish loss (over lots of missions) works out at half the % chance of a hazard , so for a pool with 17% chance of hazards, you will average a loss of 8.5% of your catch.
  • With the kind of losses I have been occurring at the far pools, which I do try to avoid at all costs but when you don't get any closer swordfish pools it has to happen sometimes, it is not profitable to fish them at all, I never come back from those pools with no losses, the skipjack in particular always loses a lot of fish.  Between losing tons of fish, and never getting enough shellfish my market contracts are at a stalemate, right now everyone needs at least 75 clams, several a lot more, pools don't even have that many clams and shellfish only occur about every 3 days or so.

We all suffer from this problem. Personally, I never bother with the furthest pool , except maybe during FHWE , because the profit per hour is too low . I almost never use any storage, at most 1 item on overnight trips , and I work to empty pools as fast as possible, which means using enough fish-per-hour crew to fill the boat, then using travel time crew to fill the remaining slots , up to when travel time is minimised . Then I might use 1 item of protection if I have spare slots or more fish -per-hour crew to cut the overall trip time .
The shellfish pools tend to appear in runs , which only last a couple of hours so best advice is if you get one, empty it and as many other pools as you can , as fast as you can, to give a better chance of another shellfish pool appearing . Possibly praying to Neptune might help ......
  • Garybaldy, good advice.   The " praying to Neptune "  advice gave me a hearty chuckle!

I really miss the days when you could load boats with storage and send them off for 12 hours, but since they slashed the fish prices but not the crew and storage costs , you cannot do it any more and hope to make money . GGS are going to look at it again, but my bet is  it won't happen until Volcanic farm is ready, then we will really need the money  ;)  ;)  ;)

Probability does not add up.  Every disaster hit causes boat to lose 10% fish.
The probability of not getting a disaster is 83%.
Probability that boat will not hit a disaster:
    0.83^5 = 0.39, 39%
There is a 61% chance that the boat will hit at least one disaster.
The probability of hitting all 5 disasters and losing half the fish:
    0.17^5 = 0.00014, only about one in 10000 chance.
If you send a level 1 trawler with 180000 dollars worth of equipment that can catch 134 fish to a swordfish, salmon, cod pool and hit all 5 disasters, the fish will still sell for 280000 dollars and still make 100000 dollars profit.  The bigger reason why not to send boats there is that it takes way too long to travel there, about 17 hours.

  • I think my skipjack has a big unlucky sign over it, the last three times it has come in there have been multiple disasters, causing me to lose 25% of the fish.  Guess the praying to Neptune is in order for that boat.  It is only a level 1 and will probably stay that way for a while since I am not of a level to upgrade even the werry.  The Werrys must be more in favor with Neptune, probably the old fashioned air about them, they often come home with no disasters or just one, the lv 6 Werry has the least amount of disasters.

I upgraded all my skipjacks to level 4 and use the following items for 124 fish no losses every-time...

    3x Freezer
    1x Nancy
    1x Lisa
1x Experienced Deck Hands, Sonar, Turbine, Survivalist & Ink Bottles.

In the grand scheme of things my lvl 6 Wherry's bring in 88 fish, no losses, but only make about half the profit that my lvl 4 skipjacks do and so I am fazing them out in favour of skipjacks
  • I will keep that in mind if I ever get to upgrade it to level 4, it will be more then 20 levels before I am allowed to go to level 2.  You use all the disaster items or one?

You can use all the disaster items but you most likely won't have room for the crew & coolers to make it worth your while
  • I haven't been using any, it just doesn't seem to be worth the cost

I use all 5 protection items...

I got a couple of skipjack level 4 from events way before I got to the player level required to upgrade skipjacks to level four.

You may be able too... I got them before my fishing level got to a certain level and I got dumped into the 65 - 999 group of players prematurely, a total bug of course that I couldn't do anything about at the time.  I dunno if the fishing group is based on player level or fishing level, but I've been in the 65 - 999 group for months now and only got my fishing level to 65 two days ago.

  • I would like to see more skippers for the fleets ,as I'm using the same skippers  on my trawlers etc when sending fleet out.
    Tight lines everyone :)))

I never get requests for lobsters!  :'(:(  I would like to see more requests for lobsters and less for shrimp/oysters/clams.  Will someone please look into why (since the inception of the Fish Market) why I do not get orders for lobsters?  :p:o Thank you very much!

Same here, and I do okay. I do equip the boats w/ crew and/or other items (that I've won, I never buy any) sometimes during the FHWE (sometimes), and once in awhile when I am close to filling a contract.  But I'm quite happy to send them out w/o anything, and complete contracts in their own sweet time.
  • There are lots of links out there to assist us in our fishing ventures; I like to use the K.I.S.S. Method.  I carry 14 boats - 4 Wherries, 4 Trawlers and 6 Skipjacks.  Outfitting them all with the proper equipment and extras costs me (rounded up) about $1.3M.  Now that the Fish Market has bonuses, I pulled in $5.2M filling one order the other day, so it's worth it to fish.  I like the Wherries to take care of the shellfish, the Skipjacks to do the mid-range deep-sea fishing, and the Trawlers to "go deep".  I always use 1 of each of the Hazard Counters per fishing fleet, and very seldom lose any fish to said hazards.  Now that we have access to the BF Calendar, it's relatively easy to figure out when the FHWE will take place and plan accordingly.  I have completed all the steps on one load of Herring in the past due to the large catch and reaching about 7/sec.  Not sure if this helps, but it's working great for me, and when I need to expand a farm I simply sell a bunch of fish, and "viola"!  So break out your sextants and head to sea.

In my 'masterplan', I would like to run with 10 Trawlers and 3 Skipjacks. Those boat have a risk when shellfish pool is open but still worth it on deeper pools, while 1 boat slot is used to scrap unnecessary boats. I have maxed out the market and now can give up to 36 Million per day if lucky, if not I can still make 3-4 Million per day.
  • Today I have a great mix of 6 lobster pools :{  I have only gotten one contract with lobsters and it was only 95 of them.  Every contract I have uses clams, in the 100's with an occasional 71 or 61 and shrimp usually way over 100.  I thought something had changed when a couple of days ago I started getting pools of shellfish, but guess that was not true.  It should not be hard to get everyone a mix of fish, yesterday it was tuna, all but one, that was lobster.  Sometimes my contracts stay for weeks waiting for shellfish in a quantity that the contract want, one pool with 30 clams is not going to do it when I need over 500 to fill the contracts.

The skipJack is still loosing at least 24 fish every other time it goes out and there is no room for much other then basics in a level 1, I guess I will have to save it for near pools.

The level 1 trawlers won from the fishing hard worker event costs less per fish than level 6 norfolk wherry, level 6 runabout, and level 2 skipjack.  Most of the capacity comes from the trawlers initial capacity, 70.  4 large freezers can be added to increase it to 134, 2 Roy and 1 Victor to catch the 134 fish.  The trawler costs about 1400 per fish while skipjack costs about 1900 per fish.
  • I just wish they would let us either dismantle unwanted boats (either from the dockyard OR in inventory) similar to how we can for decorations, or store unwanted boats in inventory, instead of having to destroy them for FXP.
dchen1, that was a great point you made about multiple ice chests on boats; I never even considered doing that before, but then, none of my boats have more than 3 spots for extra equipment/crews.
  • I have another suggestion regarding fishing and the boats; when the boats are at sea catching fish, and we click on the information "i", it would be nice to see what fish each boat is catching.  I know I don't remember hours later what I sent them out for, and it could help me decide if I wanna pull them in early or not.  Thank you.

  • I like lobsters.  I use them rather than more versatile fish to make generic chum for fulfilling my contracts.  Making generic chum also earns a lot of fishing points so that I can keep leveling up and building  better boats.
  • Lobsters/ FHWE:    Having access to a few big close-in lobster pools during a FHWE event is great for me.  With relatively little effort, I can get up to level 8 or 9 for lobsters and just let er rip for 36-48 hrs.  "Set it and forget it" as it were.  Just be really sure to check the new crazybigfarm.tk  FHWE spreadsheet to be sure that you don't reach the dreaded lobster level 10 and lose all of your work!
