Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”).
The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.
The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Halloween.
Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.
Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand.I didn't know it comes from the Gaelic's, thank you for the info
Back to ghostslaying then. *Calls Winchesters to help out on farm*
That's quite a ghost infestation you got there Michiru. Zombies, Slimer, creepy girl ghosts.. Let me try and help you out a bit with some oldfashioned exorcism rituals.
@Daredevil (GB1) is right. Halloween (31 of October) comes form pagan times (Celts) and has (almost) nothing to do with the christian holidays near the same date (1. and 2. of November)
- As @Daredevil (GB1) said Halloween comes from Celts in their pagan times. As far as I heard, originally (in old history) it was not nice holiday at all as it included human sacrifizes. When chrisitan religion came to Europe, they want to get rid of its pagan roots, put keep some cultural aspect of it. This was done in two ways:
1) by keeping halloween, but giving it more "fun and mascharade" content of light holiday without deeper meaning (this is what is going on right now on your farm
2) by puting christian holidays with similar meaning but with chirstian content near this date. This, at least in catholic religion, brought out two holidays: 1. November - All saints day and 2. November - Day of all faithtfull souls. Both hollidays are celebrated together. In christian religion we believe that after you die you can either go to the God (to Heaven) or away from Him (to Hell). The souls that enter Heaven are called saints and we remember them at 1. November. Catholic chirstians also believe that some souls (actually most of them) are, after they die, not yet ready to go to Heaven as they are not pure enough. So first thay have to clear their souls in Purgatory before entering Heaven. 2. November is in general a day dedicated to all faithfull souls (the ones in Heaven, the ones in Purgatory and the ones still on Earth), but mostly to the souls in Purgartory. At this day and acctually trough all November, we pray for them, so that they can enter Heaven as soon as possible.
As we are not sure if our beloved ancessors are in Purgatory or Heaven, both days are celebrated together and tradion is that we visit their graves and bring flowers and candels to the graves as well as pray for all that passed away. This two holidays are therefore celebrated peacefully and have nothing to do with the halloween "gousts mascarade" stuff.
Now that Halloween is over, can we get back our ordinary yellow SMILEYS, please???
I wanna have my smileys back!
I think I'm going to miss those little fellas... they look like onigiri *drools*
Bye Bye, Halloween thread!
