Each farm (Main farm, gourmet farm & flower farm) have some different buildings, you can see them on the build menu for each one. Some people like to follow the tasks & build their farm that way, but you can build it however you want it. It depends on what you feel is best for you, whether you want to make lots of money, or have a farm that is good for coop projects or missions or if you just want it to look pretty. There is not a written down guide, because each person creates their own unique farm. You can go to look at lots of other farms to get ideas.

As Scissors says, it's up to you. I guess each farm starts with what it "needs", a house, a barn, a mill etc.
If you log on infrequently cows are good, milk every 7hrs. If you're logged on for several hours at a time, chickens are very profitable, every 13mins. Equally it all has to balance; enough animals to produce enough dung to produce enough fertiliser to feed enough orchards to produce enough fruit to supply the bakery to produce whatever products you prefer. Everybodies choices are different so the farms are different too. It's one of the bits of this game I like the best, I'm not straight-jacketed into some master plan, I have to decide for myself. :¬)
