Island dollars conversion to shells

PootsyPootsy Posts: 24
?(I'm trying to work out the cost/sale ratios of the various drinks on the Island farm to decide whether it's worth my while actually making them or is it more of an advantage to just grow & sell the fruit. I'm not a maths whizz;( & have come to a sticky point in my calculations whereby the production costs are of course in dollars but the selling amounts are obviously in shells lol

Has anyone already found out or please could anyone tell me what a shell is worth in dollars?? :D I would be eternally grateful lol

(there is no doubt in my mind that the conversion is perfectly simple but unfortunately so is my brain lolol)

I think it all depends on how much it costs to make your fizz I have low happiness so costs $20.000 to make drinks

There is no conversion of farm $ to shells that anyone can agree on. You can figure out GGS's conversion by figuring out the cost for Farm dollars in Gold at Omars, and Shells at Omars. That said, I doubt any players would agree on a fixed number.

It doesn't matter though. You can figure out the Cost/time of every Drink in Dollars. And the Cost/time of every fruit in dollars. And you can figure out the production#/time for every Drink, and every fruit. Then you can create a ratio of Cost/Time in Dollars to Production/Time in Shells for each item and then see which ratio is the most favorable. That way you don't need to worry about a $:shells ratio. You can use a measure of time (I prefer minutes), which is constant for both dollars and shells.

One 'trick' to note though, is that the time to produce Tropic Star is less than the time to actually produce the ingredients IN it.... thus you should, in my opinion, adjust the time to produce Stars accordingly.

    Good luck!

    Over in this thread

Volty summed it up pretty simply - if you want more shells, make drinks (orange fizz). If you want to spend the least money, sell oranges.

I look at it as this is my way to "buy" seashells (since I don't think the island will ever turn a profit by itself, what you are hoping for is to maximize your shells so you can buy the most greenhouse seeds so you can keep the ship supplied so you can earn horseshoes so you can train your horse so you can upgrade your stable...).

I keep it super simple - I grow mostly oranges & make orange fizz, and when I have longer periods of time and a stockpile of oranges then I grow peanuts, & grapes overnight.

I haven't done the nitty gritty math calculations, though, just compared the profit (in shells) from 300 oranges to the profit from one batch of orange fizz. For me it is almost twice the profit to make orange fizz, and I'm not investing any more than a bit more island dollars and extra time. Yes, there is a cost to make drinks but I figure since I am not sucked into the make feed --> feed animals --> make fertilizer loop that it compares favorably to what I am saving by sticking just to field crops.
