Helpful Hints

There's a LOT to learn in this game about developing and managing a profitable farming operation. And, at least for me, a lot of things were far from obvious at first. I thought it might be useful to have a thread for players to post tips and suggestions that they have found particularly helpful in their games.

Please, let's keep this thread constructive and helpful. Yes, the game has bugs and we all get frustrated from time to time with something, but those sorts of issues are off-topic here. This thread is for people to share helpful ideas, period.

So I'll start. I have two things that were great revelations to me when I (finally) discovered them:

1. First, the importance of upgrading the farmhouse or cabin. It gives you a few extra workers without any happiness hit, the farmhouse on your main farm gives a bit of extra storage, and most of all, it shortens the time of all building you do on that farm. I just completed the final upgrade to the farmhouse on my main farm, and it gives me a 50% reduction to all building - upgrades, new houses, decorations - everything takes half as much time as it would without the upgraded farmhouse. It makes a HUGE difference!

2. I'm a little embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure this out, and maybe it's not a revelation to anyone else, but here goes. I'm a Sims 3 player, and in that game, Build Mode has a grid you can see, which makes it easy to place things. For the longest time, I kept wishing for a visible grid in this game so I could see how many free squares of space I had. Then one day, something finally prompted me to click the "change cursor" button. Et voila! Changing the cursor to "move" gave me the grid I had been longing for. Better late than never, right?

So what other useful hints and discoveries do you have to share with the community here?

o.k. I'll give my little tip as well.
When the wheel of fortunes comes on, don't use it unless you have 8 coins. You can save up your coins and will get one for free every time it comes on, so with a little patience you will get the free bonus jackpot spins. Now I know this is allready mentioned on Larino's (thank you for that one btw, big fan here) just thought I would mention it once more on here. Besides I was pretty proud of finding that one out for myself before finding it on your site ;-)

And of course, take the time it takes to run something into account when starting it. Wheat before you go to sleep/work/school, corn when you are online. Upgrades as much as possible during the night as well so you loose no more time then absolutely necessary.

Always be sure your flash player is up-to-date. In the game, right-click anywhere and a pop-up should tell you what version you have. Click on it and it should take you to the webpage for your product to test to see if you have the most recent update.

One of the best tips I saw posted on the forum was along the lines of:

When applying for a co-op, whether on the forum or in game, sell yourself to that co-op. Tell us what makes you special, how often you play, that you understand the co-op rules, etc.

Do your research before applying. Do you meet the level requirements? Are you willing to abide by their rules and regulations?

Fill out the little message box that is on the application. Message the leader or deputies.

And apply for co-ops that suit your level. If everyone else in the co-op is 30 levels or more higher than your level, you are probably not going to be a good fit (if they even accept you). While it may seem desirable to join a high ranking co-op right off the bat, you will not be able to afford their research or donation costs and your farm will suffer as a result (or you'll be booted).
