As for hints, I would suggest that you read through the Tips and Tricks forum - there's a lot of them there.
Something to consider though, the water tower is really helpful with keeping your animals fed. Each level reduces the amount of feed needed by 10% so a level 1 tower only requires 9 lots of feed rather than 10. It also reduces your fertilizer needs by the same percentage.
As for friends, you don't need them in the game, but you can make friends by joining a cooperative or participating around the forum - we have some awesome members here.
