Upgrading using cash

Why does a house purchased with gold have to be upgraded with gold? I've stopped using gold now because I know that any upgrades will need more gold. So much simpler to have everything in either gold or cash.

It's because everything that is purchased with gold needs to be upgraded with gold and everything purchased with cash will need to be upgraded with cash.

So it is only ever the blue houses, water tower and workshop that need to be upgraded with gold :)

If you choose to spend gold you do gain benefits. I have particularly found that the water tower was worth all the gold I paid for it! And the blue houses enable you to have more workers without using more space. You have to weigh up how much benefit it is to you personally, and how much gold you want to spend.

I do agree that GGS Big Farm is a business and it needs income as all businesses do. I have also invested in water tower and find it really useful to have. What I do not agree with, is that we are not able to see upfront how much upgrades are going to cost in the future. It would be really good to see before you build, what is it going to cost to upgrade, so we could make informed decisions.
