Eliminate running costs

short79short79 Posts: 174
I searched the forum but could not find the info I was looking for. Anyway, the help guide states under 'Running Costs' which is listed under 'Happiness' this; "If your happiness is perfect, you eliminate all running costs." What exactly is their definition of 'perfect happiness'? I spoke with another player who says they have -100% but there are still running costs. What does a player do in the game so that the running costs are gone? ?(

i will take the fields as an example

when you want to sow wheat you need to buy seeds cost $450 this is a fixed price
then to sow your wheat you pay $512 (running cost)
the $512 is what you can bring down to $0 when you get 100% happiness

when you sow your field hover over the calculator next to the seeds this will explain your price

Running at -100% happiness can eliminate most costs except as toetsoep mentioned the seed costs. The fields, gardens and meadows all have seed costs that you cannot escape.

You know, I didn't even think to check to see if this player realized that there is a fixed priced on seeds. I just assumed it was common knowledge. I congratulated her on winning a mission in which it was a close race between us and later she wrote wondering how to get her running costs zero. I told her she needs to add decorations until the running cost percentage is -100 (just so I am not mistaken, this is the happiness level, right even though it says running costs?). I'm not sure how she did it or, now if she did it all but she writes me a little over an hour later saying that she was still paying costs even though she had -100%. Now, I haven't managed the -100% yet but I'm sitting pretty at -60. I had just assumed that that was what need to be done and then she tells me it didn't work! Thanks for the replies as I had felt like I had told her to do the wrong thing!

Well, it's a little confusing how the game refers to how housing and decoration happiness points affect the running costs. At the top of the main screen where the orange and green bar is, it will show you numbers for Houses, Decorations, the Total of the difference and Running Cost %. There is a non-linear relationship between that percentage and the other values. If you add +30 points with a decoration, it will usually not reduce that percentage by 30 percentage points.

If you look at a house, there will be a listing for Happiness in the negative, and similarly for a decoration it will list Happiness in the positive. These are the points referred to in the main screen bar.

When you go to produce at a building like the Silo for example, you can hover over the calculator and it will list Running Cost, Happiness and Total. This Happiness will be in farmdollars and represents the reduction (or addition) to the base Running Costs charged when you start production. It is equal to that base Running Cost x the Running Cost % as shown on the main screen. If the main screen % is positive, then this Happiness will be positive as well, increasing the costs.

To me, costs are always in dollar amounts, not ratios. I get confused when someone says "Lower your running costs to -100" because what first comes to mind is -100 farmdollars, not -100%. Therefore I prefer to think of that percentage as a happiness percentage. Then, if you know the Running Cost of a building, you can multiply that by 100% plus or minus the happiness percentage (as I call it), and you will get the actual Running Cost.

Besides the word Happiness being used in two different locations for two different kinds of quantities, the other confusing part is because the main screen bar lists the percentage as a negative (but means better). The way it is now, it acts more as an unhappiness percentage because positive numbers are worse.
