Will upgrading the main farmhouse cause production and building costs to go down?

    Nope, just construction speed.

You will also get more storage space

I think you also get some workers, so happiness and therefore production costs will go up. There is no-one about for me to check that, perhaps someone else can chime in here?

Yep, you get more storage space and some more workers too indeed Rhon.

Each level of the house gives you 50 more storage space and 2 more workers.

Cedie, if you click on the main house, you get the usual circle. At about ten oclock, there is a big I in an orange circle. If you click that you get info about the building. This goes for other buildings as well. Production buildings even get 2 tabs where you can get info about them.
If you go to the building tab and you click on a building, there is information there too. If you then click the big I bottom-right-ish of that screen, you can also get more information!

The farmhouse doesn't have any happiness rating, so production costs won't change when you upgrade it. You basically get 2 workers for free.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question. There are pro's and cons--More storage and shorter construction time vs. more workers who want more happiness or else you pay higher production costs. I think I will stay put and patiently wait until my discretionary cash flow grows a little more. Thanks again!:)

As Juniper said, cedie, the happiness does not change. Your workers (naggers) only nag when you build them a house. The few workers that are allowed to live in the manor are happy there and they won't affect your happiness :)
The upgrade costs lots, but you get 2 workers for "free"
