Just how bad is high maintenance?

Just wondering how bad it is to have high maintenance. It appears to me, once your farm is making a reasonable amount of money, the high maintenance is just a loss of petty cash, that you still come out quite a bit ahead, a least on the first farm.

What are players's experiences with this? Is it really worth the effort bothering with decor or is it not such a big deal to have more expenses?

I suspect the result is worse on the second farm but I'd like some feedback on this please.

There was a person in my co-op who had high maintenance. I don't remember what her actual worst happiness % was, it calculates to about +127%, but she said she was paying 20k to start her cherries. Sure her cherries were selling for 39.6k, but that's too much to have to pay. We urged her to make space for some better decorations, and she got down to -8% that night I believe and was paying closer to 8k. That's a savings of 16k twice a day or 32k total. That will add up. The closer to -100% the less benefit though. For those cherries she would only save 8k in costs at -100%, but then there is also the silo, which is 1285 at 0% to make 10 fertilizer or 3855 for 30. At -100% happiness, it doesn't cost anything to make the fertilizer nor to plant the cherries.

Most of the buildings on the 2nd farm have somewhat high running costs such as 2125 for the tomatoes, 2000 for marzipan, 1250 for cherry juice, 2000 for spaghetti. The restaurant recipies sell for good amounts though, such as 16k for cherry juice or 28k for spaghetti (but spaghetti consists of other components which have their own extra costs).

In my own experience, I generally try to do better than -50%, but sometimes that's difficult when you need space to build more decorations or money to replace older decorations. However, my goal is to reach -100%. If you can reduce your costs, it will make it easier to do everything in the game. Think of it like how compounded interest seems small, but has a large impact over time. I think that reducing running costs help in a similar fashion.

I'd read somewhere here you can get running costs to -300%! Did I misread that?

I think you did misread Rusty Farmer. +300% yes, but you can't get beyond no running cost, ie -100%

I'm now .on -87. I built down a field, a house and a chicken house to build more decoration.
And now I make much more money, witch I need to by more land!! For more decorations!!
    So much easier playing
