"place" the machines?

So in your garage you have all sorts of machines.
What's the thing with "place"?
I get the activate or upgrade thing. But "place" doesn't seem to make any difference.

    I think it acts like an appearance. It doesn't have any practical use apart from being able to use it to save a click while activating a specific farm machine.

    As Ninja says, it acts as a shortcut to that machine. I run the SpecialPress constantly for g/h humus so I have it "placed"; Click on it and I'm there ready to start it again
