Fishing

I've done some tests yesterday and today and i noticed that you don't get any bonus when you put some mix.
The quantity remains the same.Why?

  • i believe those numbers you are pointing to with the red arrow are the fish that are AVAILABLE in the ocean pool to catch, or the maximum your boat could catch, and it won't necessarily be the same quantity the boat will catch.  adding chum won't increase the quantity of fish available, only the quantity you catch IF more are available than your boat is already set up to catch.
I'm not sure i explained that very well. maybe someone else can say it better.

In my experience, adding chum makes you fish a little faster, but doesn't change the amount of fish caught.
Look at the time in your screenshots: without chums it's 2:15, with chums it's 1:44

The only reason I can think of for it is that when GGS wrote the description for chum - "can be used as bait to help attract and catch more fish" - they forgot to add PER HOUR to this little text...
  • Lylu (INT1)Lylu (INT1) INT1 Posts: 448
Chum only affects the speed with which you catch the fish that are available.  It does not add any additional fish to amount you can catch or that are available.  In the images you posted, note the difference in trip time shown in the upper left.

The Fish caught rule/formula is :

Maximum fish caught  by one boat in one trip will be the lesser of
    a) "Fishing time of the boat"   X  "Fish per Hour loaded"  X   (1+Chum % loaded)
    b) the boat's maximum capacity
    c) the fish remaining in the pool when you sent the boat

---- example based on image above
    a) without chum  2h45m  X 45fph = 123   with chum 2h45m  X 45fph  X 1.60  = 198
    b) 195
    c) 101
so in both cases with or without chum the limiting factor is the amount of fish in the pool (101).

The only thing that changes the result of the above rule/formula is the use of Ghost Rod (sparkle) onto your boat.  The bonus from Ghost Rods creates additional fish in the boat based on the the number that have been (or will be caught) using the rule/formula above.  If a GR was applied to the boat in the example, it would catch 101 fish, but unload 126 fish when it returns to the dock.  GRs can be applied at anytime before the boat is unloaded and still have effect (i.e. before you send the boat, while at the pool or once returned to dock).

Thankyou all for this info. I had been planning on revisiting how chum worked and now I don't have to.  :¬))

A GR can be applied while the boat is still in the dock too. I recommend using them on a level 6 trawler before it is sent out. Then the owner can make best use of the bonus as they see fit.

Sorry for being dumb or having a senior moment, but what is a GR?

GR= Ghost Rod ~A gift that can be given to another player to increase harvest of fish

Ever since the fish market has been in existence, I have never (repeat never) gotten a single order for lobsters.  I know of other farmers who have gotten them and some even get these request for lobster on a regular basis.  Why I have never received an order for them?  Instead I get a ton of requests for shrimp, oysters and clams. I sure would like to see regular orders for lobsters.  Thank you.

You can have mine! I get them quite often, and wish I wouldn't. I prefer to use them to stock up on chum for contracts.

I often get lobsters in multi-item contracts , still get a large surplus of them, but find that selling them pays for the crews on all my boats . IMO the market would work quite well by reducing the amount of clams and shrimp being asked for, and reducing the "valuable" rewards that were introduced to cut the returns , so we could actually get the dollars, there are plenty of expensive expansions to be bought now .Also, cost of crew and storage items should be reduced a bit, they were unchanged when the fish price was slashed .
At the moment, using storage items is not worthwhile generally and it means that the flexibility of the DSF has been reduced, in the good old days you could crew up your boats to suit your gameplay, using fishing time crew and storage if you were away from game doing real life stuff like working or sleeping ...

It's got that way now if I receive an order that needs oysters, shrimp or clams, I usually bin it now...

Chum gives your boat a speed bonus, the boat comes back faster but it will carry no extra fish.

Each type of chum gives a speed bonus on certain fish but not others. You should be selective on which chum you add depending on what type of fish is in the pool

Please remember that chum is expensive to produce, it might be a good idea to add an extra fisherman, so that you increase the number of fish / hour caught, rather than adding chum. Do that only if you really need to have that fish back very fast, as during the F-HWE, otherwise better save your resources and aim for higher profit

    Hjælp søges 
Har set et sted herinde på forum at man kan lette fremgangsmåden, når man bemander bådene.
Hvordan gør i det .... Trækker i jeres mandskab og redskaber over i bådene .....

    Help sought 
Have seen somewhere in this forum that you can ease the approach when manning the boats.
How do you do it .... Draws in your crew and gear in the boats .....
Sorry I ask, but it's a bit tiring a procedure,
the one where you pull all the crew into the boats.
(What I saw was something that could be done below, but not sure.
You can double-click on that thing and onwards, they jump over to the boats themselves. )
But I do not get it done :(

Hope this is what you needed.

@PicklePaws - could you please explain this "Shift+ALT" procedure in more detail - I've tried several sequences and can't seem to enable the "just..click" to man boats feature.

I already know about holding down the shift key and then clicking the man/equipment you want to move into the boat but it sounds like you are describing another different shortcut that would eliminate the need to hold down the shift key during the process of selecting items to move into the boat.
  • @Lylu (INT1)
hmmmm that only seems to work in the stand alone player.  Let me look into this a little more I thought it worked on the others too.

@PicklePaws Works wonderful for me.  Thank you for this tip.
  • @Lylu (INT1)

Okay if you use Internet Explorer or the standalone flash player if you hold down Shift and ALT at the same time while using your mouse to click the stuff you want to man your boats with then the next boat you go to, you can just use your mouse.  Sometime I have to do 2 boats before it works, but it sure saves time.  Also you do have to do this each time you load the game but shouldn't have to if you are just going between farms.

@PicklePaws - thanks for looking into this a bit deeper.  Unfortunately, I use Opera; so I'll have to settle for the two-handed  short-cut of holding down Shift while clicking the items to move.  Still a time saver, though.

    @Ises (SKN1)

If you are using one of the other browsers and you don't want to have to drag your equipment you can just hold down the shift key and use your mouse to just click on the actual equipment you want to put in the boat.  However you will have to do this everytime you man your boat.  This is how you would have to do it if you were using chrome, opera or edge.

  • Fishing Region
There seems to be a lot of confusion on how to use the fishing region to it's
maximum effect.  Hopefully, this will help!
    The Boats
There are five different boats available to buy, upgrade, and use in this region:
    1) Motorboat
    2) Runabout
    3) Norfolk Wherry
    4) Skipjack
    5) Trawler
The bigger the boat, the faster it can travel, and the more fish it can catch.
Each boat can be upgraded to a maximum level of 6.  The higher the level, the
    more fish it can catch.
You can have a maximum of 14 boats in your fishing fleet.
Some boats won't be available to you until you have reached a required level in
the region.  As a result, you may have to start out with smaller boats, depending
    on your current level.
Some boats can only be upgraded once you've reached a required level in the region.
As a result, you may not be able to upgrade your fleet as quickly as you would like.
If you have reached the maximum number of boats allowed, but you want to add a bigger
boat to your fleet, you can demolish one of your existing boats and replace it with a
bigger one.  As a bonus, you will receive game cash for the value of the boat that you
    demolish!
    The Crew
There are three different crew members available for each boat type.  Each crew member
is only good for a specific type of boat, so placing a crew member for a Runabout onto
a Trawler will not help you to catch more fish.
    Captain (Travel Speed)
    1) Jim (Motorboat)
    2) Joe (Runabout)
    3) Carol (Norfolk Wherry)
    4) Ian (Skipjack)
    5) Brigitte (Trawler)
    Fisherman (Fish Caught Per Hour)
    1) John (Motorboat)
    2) Paul (Runabout)
    3) James (Norfolk Wherry)
    4) Nancy (Skipjack)
    5) Roy (Trawler)
    Engineer (Fishing Time)
    1) Walter (Motorboat)
    2) Gerald (Runabout)
    3) Russell (Norfolk Wherry)
    4) Lisa (Skipjack)
    5) Victor (Trawler)
    Capacity
You can increase the capacity of your ships by adding coolers.  There are five different
coolers available, and each one of them is only good for a specific type of boat, so
placing a cooler for a Trawler onto a Motorboat will not help you to catch more fish.
    1) Small Cooler (Motorboat)
    2) Coolbox (Runabout)
    3) Thermic Box (Norfolk Wherry)
    4) Freezer (Skipjack)
    5) Large Freezer (Trawler)
    Equipment
There are nine different pieces of equipment that are available to help you catch specific
types of fish.  This equipment can be used on ANY boat.
    1) Trawl (Shrimp)
    2) Stand Up Rod (Tuna)
    3) Lobster Cage (Lobster)
    4) Rake (Oysters)
    5) Graphite Rod (Cod)
    6) Trolling Rod (Salmon)
    7) Bent Trolling Rod (Swordfish)
    8) Fish Net (Herring)
    9) Deep Water Sifter (Clams)
By using this equipment, you can specify exactly what type of fish you want to catch.  For
example, if you are fishing in an area that has cod, salmon and swordfish, but you only need
to catch swordfish, then add the Bent Trolling Rod to your ship before you send it out.
This will assure that ONLY swordfish are caught by that ship.
Since fishing areas with lobster contain no other types of fish, there's really no need to
ever use the lobster cage.  Save your money and don't buy them.  If you are ever given cages
as rewards, hold on to them.  Sometimes you can trade them in during themed events for other
    prizes.
    Fishing Area
There are a maximum of six available fishing areas at any time.  Each area will only be
available for 24 hours, then it will disappear and be replaced with another area in another
location.  There are four types of fishing areas.
    1) Shrimp, Oysters, Clams
    2) Tuna, Herring
    3) Cod, Salmon, Swordfish
    4) Lobster
    Chum
Chum is used to increase the number of fish that you can catch.  Each type of chum works
on a specific type of fish, and increases your catch by a different amount.
    1) Chum (10% more of ANY type of fish)
    2) Oyster Chum (15% more of herring, tuna, cod, salmon, swordfish, and lobster)
    3) Clam Chum (15% more of herring, tuna, cod, salmon, swordfish, and lobster)
    4) Shrimp Chum (15% more of herring, tuna, cod, salmon, swordfish, and lobster)
    5) Herring Chum (20% more cod, salmon, swordfish, and lobster)
    6) Tuna Chum (20% more cod, salmon, swordfish, and lobster)
    7) Lobster Chum (25% more cod, salmon, and swordfish)
Be careful when selecting which chum to use!  Lobster chum will give you a 25% boost in fish,
but only if you're fishing in an area with cod, salmon and swordfish.  If you're fishing in
an area with lobster, shrimp, clams, or oysters, you won't get the 25% boost, and you'll just
    be wasting your chum.
How to control "what" and "how much" you catch
When you select a boat from your fleet to fish in a specific fishing area, the boat will
    display four attributes.
    1) Travel Time Saved (More time saved means it'll return with your catch sooner)
    2) Capacity (The number of fish it can hold)
    3) Fish Caught Per Hour
    4) Fishing Time
Multiply "Fish Caught Per Hour" by "Fishing Time" to determine how many fish you're going to
be able to catch.  NOTE: If fishing time is 1:30:00, and fish caught per hour is 6, then 6
    times 1.5 equals 9 fish.
To increase the amount of fish you can catch, you can
    1) Add a fisherman to your boat (to increase your "fish per hour" catch)
    2) Add an engineer to your boat (to increase your "fishing time")
    3) Add coolers/freezers to your boat (to increase your capacity)
    4) Add chum (to increase catch)
You can add more than one fisherman, engineer, cooler, freezer, or chum to your boat.
The total number of fish you catch will be either your boat's capacity OR "fishing time"
times "fish caught per hour," WHICHEVER IS THE SMALLEST.  In other words, if you have a
capacity of 50 fish, and can catch 14 fish an hour for 6.5 hours for a total of 91 fish
(14 x 6.5), you will bring home only 50 fish, because that's all your boat can carry.
If you increase your capacity to 100 fish, with the same number of fish caught, then you
will bring home 91 fish.  Always try to have your capacity be a little more than you can
catch so you're not wasting your fish.
I know this seems a little weird, but you'll get used to it!
As you increase the level of your boat, you'll have more slots that you can fill with
fishermen, engineers and coolers, so you'll have to swap in/out your crew and capacities in
order to find which combination maximizes your catch.
NOTE: If you add chum to your boat, make sure that you have enough capacity to hold the extra
fish!  If you're going to catch 99 fish and only have capacity for 100, it doesn't make any
sense to use chum.  If you're going to catch 90 fish and have capacity for 100, use one 10%
chum to bring your total catch to 99.
    BONUS STRATEGY
As I stated earlier, each fishing area only lasts for 24 hours.  If you should "fish out" the
area (catch all of the fish available), then that area will disappear when your last ship
returns and give you a new fishing area.  By "fishing out" each area, you will give yourself
extra areas to fish (and sooner!) every day, which will only increase the number of fish you
    will be able to catch!

You can find all that & more here ;)

    https://www.crazybigfarm.tk/

    Check under "Fishing Region"
     for tips, suggestions & video's

A couple of things you may be confused on
"NOTE: If you add chum to your boat, make sure that you have enough capacity to hold the extra fish!  If you're going to catch 99 fish and only have capacity for 100, it doesn't make any sense to use chum.  If you're going to catch 90 fish and have capacity for 100, use one 10% chum to bring your total catch to 99."
     - Chum does NOT increase the amount of fish caught - only speeds up the fish caught per hour. The only way to increase the amount of fish caught is with a rod/gift ;)

Avoid coolers as they are very expensive. I have found that by using only TS & FCPH crews for the ships, not only costs about half as it would if you added coolers. You can actually bring in more fish a day.
  • If you don't increase the capacity of the ships (with coolers), then how are you supposed to catch more fish?  Are you suggesting that we should catch fewer fish per trip, but shorten the trip durations (ie: instead of catching 100 fish with one trip, catch 55 fish in two trips)?

  • garybaldy (GB1)garybaldy (GB1) GB1 Posts: 502
That is exactly the point , for max output you need to catch more fish per hour, this also turns over the pools more quickly, giving you more shellfish, which tend to be the limiting factor on filling contracts . Time saving crew are cheap . I would suggest that storage boxes are not cost effective except for limited circumstances , like FHWE ,but that is likely to be a non starter with no warning time now being given.

About the chum or bait. On a level 6 trawler when you use 1 extra freezer 6 roys and 1 bait. You will cath more fish than the 195,the capaticy goes up to 211 i thought but 1 chum or bait is cheaper than 1 crewmember and you can crack up the fish caught a bit
  • Uncle John (GB1)Uncle John (GB1) GB1 Posts: 11,004
In those circumstances I usually use a John because I win lots of them making them the cheapest of all namely free !    :¬)
  • I "get" how coolers are expensive and cut down on profits, but the rest of the math isn't working out for me...

If I add a "boat load" of deck hands that increase my fish/h count, but don't increase my capacity, I have to send a boat back to "fish out" that spot because I couldn't catch all of the fish with the first four boats I sent.  Now I'm spending even MORE money on deck hands, and I'm losing time because I didn't wipe out the fish on my first visit.

I see that chum speeds up the number of fish caught per hour, but exactly what does that mean?  Does it shorten the fishing trip?  Catching fish "faster" doesn't help me if the boat still sits there for 6 hours whether it catches it's limit in 30 minutes or takes the whole 6 hours to do so.

Also, I can't figure out how to determine the length of the fishing trip prior to sending it out.  If I could tell how long the round trip would be BEFORE I send it out, it would help me decide which spots are worth fishing.  In other words, if a spot is active for 6 more hours, but it's gonna take my boat(s) 7 hours to get back, it's better to wait for the spot to expire instead of having a boat unavailable for an hour (or more!) past the spot's active time.
