First off, I think there is a serious error in the calculations for player brackets. Here's my example from the current bracket I'm in:
1st place (Level 349) - Maximum boat is Level 6 Trawler
2nd place (Level 183) - Level 6 Trawler
3rd place (Level 221) - Level 6 Trawler
4th place (Level 168) - Level 6 Trawler
5th place (Level 322) - Level 6 Trawler
6th place (Level 353) - Level 6 Trawler
7th place (Level 69) - Maximum boat is Level 4 Norfolk Wherry
The inherited problem (without selling your soul for gold) is that level requirements for the dockyard and the boats are based on XP level while the FHWE brackets are decided by Fishing Level. The inconsistency could cause a serious level fluctuation (as noted above). The simple solution is either to bracket the FHWE by XP Level or change the dockyard (and boat) build/upgrade requirements to use Fishing Level. This should keep competition within an average capability for each bracket.
Secondly, at this stage, the entire FHWE boils down to whoever can click their first boat the fastest. In this particular bracket, the distance between 1st and 7th is 118 points (less than 12 seconds @ 10 points per second). This is a 3-day event where the ranks are boiled down to the first 20 seconds of the event. My sarcastic position would ask "Why not just have a button that whoever pushes it first gets the first place reward?" because, essentially, that's what the FHWE is at that level. A simple fix would be to completely randomize the first fish (instead of Oysters) to pack in the box. It's the obvious point that everyone (which I am also guilty of) fills their boats with Oysters the day before the FHWE starts, then unloads at the go making it a "who-clicks-first" endeavor. Changing what's first might skew the #s just a bit.
Lastly, I think a larger reward/prize list is needed and the reward list needs revised. We're around halfway through the FHWE and the top 50 in the bracket are already 200,000 points ( 16% ) over the highest reward. A deeper prize list (perhaps extending the number to 50 prizes instead of 38) would definitely be a boon. As for the list of prizes, I think some of them really needs to be more suited to the competition bracket. Even at this level, some of the prizes were fishing gear for Motorboats (which I doubt anyone in this bracket uses) and, at least, one was for a Norfolk Wherry (which I might be one of the very few that finds it useful). I may be wrong, but those prizes might not provide any benefit to most of those in the bracket. Perhaps providing fishing gear for Skipjacks and Trawlers might be more useful.
