Is the number of researchers required based on the level of our co-op or he number of members?  Or is it the same for all co-ops regardless of level or members?

If someone pays gold for a researcher and then the research is changed, does the paid for guy stay in the original research or does he disappear? (did that make sense?)

If you buy a researcher with gold, he stays with that research forever, or until that research is done. There is no way to move or un-donate  him.

So if we decide to change research, we'll be able to and he will be waiting for us (in the research for which he was bought) when we are ready to do it. Correct? We don't want to move him, just don't want him to leave before he does the job he was hired for.

That's correct. He'll stay there till you get around to doing that research. That's why you should warn your members beforehand that any researchers paid for with gold cannot be moved. They are better used in the researches that you are working on now. Some of the researches cost a large amount of gold to start, so it might be a loooong time till that researcher gets used.
