horse breeding question

So now that I did this, what's the best plan with this odd ball. He's a level 40. Do I just consider him a level 40 and go from there? Or does half his higher breeding count for anything? If I cross him with the one I PLANNED to cross the level 67 with will that be just another huge mistake or will the resulting horse be trainable?

I was in platinum. Seems I'm in gold now. Next horse in line isn't even up to 40 yet.
Stupid mistake.
I think we've all made mistakes breeding -- I've started completely over with the horses, so don't think you're alone.

Click the transporter. Then, click the Tournament Preparation tab near the top. (It has a horse with a shield.) Then, click the box at the bottom. ("Select the best horse for each discipline automatically") Now, your best defenders will be set.
As Cookiie4me mentioned, this new horse likely has 4 breeding effects since one of the parents had 4. That is an advantage for now, but you will still have to wait until you reach level 70 for the 5th breeding effects slot to open.
To answer your question, there are four things to consider with training and breeding going forward: comparable parents, training costs, breeding quality and breeding effects.
Comparable parents: (You know this one.) Your foal will be the average of the two parents skill levels for each of the three areas, and will have the corresponding overall training level. Choosing to breed similar level horses saves you from backslides and upsets.
Training costs: After a while, training costs become too high and you will need to breed to make progress again. That is why bigger stables are great. You will have lots of horses training at different stages so you can eventually breed your top horses. For intermediate horses, I like to train until it takes more than 2 regular training sessions to reach the next level (over 400 points). At that point, spending over 4000 horseshoes for one level of progress seems wasteful. For the top horses, you can be more generous with training, as it takes a long time to find a mate and advance.
Breeding quality (BQ): This is the shape with a number in the upper left corner of your horse's square in the stable. The higher the number, the better chance of getting a higher quality breeding effect for the foal when you breed.
Breeding effects: You unlock slots for breeding effects slots at levels 10, 20, 35, 50, 70 & 90. Ideally, you should target so that you unlock a new breeding effects slot when you breed. To see the advantages of this, look at the links Data King posted above.
So, train your new horse and keep your highest level horse as defender and challenger. Decide upon breeding as you see how the training is going. Best of luck in the horse season. I hope you make it back to Platinum.
(kicks self yet again.)
I sure do with when your breeding the game wouldn't automatically select your highest level horse.
I wish I could CHECK THE TWO I want to breed and do it that way. Not have to scroll through till I get to the lower level ones.
Agh, just gotta be very careful. (not the first time I did this, first with such a high level though.)
DOH!
you are highier than me.
