You already answered your own question:To entice players to use gold.
EVERYTHING about this game is about how to entice us to buy & use gold.5 -

I thought the point of missions was to get certificates to upgrade farm machines. Once they are all fully upgraded, then there is no point apart from a few to run the machines.
They added the coop challenge to give them back a purpose, which was potentially an awesome addition to the game, but unfortunately the overuse of that mission, the completey ridiculous ranking system & the solo mission problem, have all ruined the event now.

A member of the co-op I'm in has had 78% solo missions since this past Monday. There is something very wrong in that.
I have two machines that aren't fully, upgraded. I don't care as I don't use them anyway. I no longer do missions, except occasionally during a co-op championship but I'm also sick to the back teeth of those.
They want us to play missions knowing there are lots of people who have an obsession of winning at all costs (GOLD) so they disguised missions as a means to upgrade garages, then as a way to win coop challenges.
Why? to help other players in the game. Sometimes I end up with zero, since I just go about playing what I need, not to win a mission. Most of the time, though, I can contribute to the total points in the mission and help those who need certificates or ribbons for machines or side tasks. Doesn't cost me anything, and I enjoy helping.
So please try it
